Hi, I am Yoko. I've been with ToursByLocals since June 2018. I had a few years off from guiding during and a little while after Covid-19 until December 2023. So, about one and a half years, I garnered 59 five star reviews (hurray!) on ToursByLocals which I highly appreciate to all of my customers for that! And in January 2024, I am finally back to the marketplace which I missed so much! Before the pandemic battered the travel industry globally, I had many customers from around the world from ToursByLocals. I was lucky enough to have had wonderful customers and each tour was memorable and enjoyable. The Rugby World Cup 2019 held in Japan was phenomenal. I did tours almost every day and all of my customers shared their excitements with me. Let me talk about what you can expect from my tours. Art, design, craftwork, architecture, fashion, tea ceremony. . . if these keywords ring bell, I may be the right one. As a former art college student in London, England, I am still pretty keen on the arts. Architecture in particular, is one of my expertise that I've guided pretty often even during my hiatus period. Tokyo can offer some architectural gems, and it's heading to a more environmentally friendly direction such as increasing number of wooden high-rise buildings being planned. About anime or manga, though I respect sub-culture, I'm sorry I'm not the best guide, if these are your interests. Having been a tea ceremony practitioner for 15 years, it is also my passion. It is a quintessential Japanese culture that crystallizes all the art forms of our unique culture: tea, flower arrangement, painting, calligraphy, architecture, incense ceremony, traditional artisanal works. . . It can be felt with five senses; thus, I find the common aspects with architecture that also stimulate the five senses. Tea whisks, kimono, among other craftwork are important components of the tea ceremony; however, just like many traditional things, they're on the verge of extinction. But in recent years, works by craftspeople are catching attention worldwide and even Western luxury brands started to pay special attention to Italian or Japanese craftwork. As a guide, discovering and introducing these hidden Japanese treasures to my customers is one of my aspirations and missions to save our tradition. I am a pretty traditional-oriented person, but at the same time, my mindset is pretty business-oriented. This is because I've been in global businesses for long. Therefore, I welcome business travellers with whom I enjoy exchanging views about the world! Licensed tour guide-interpreter I'm not a driver but I can accompany you in your vehicle.

Overview of your Tokyo tour

Shibuya has inspired many films including Hollywood: Sophia Coppola's "Lost in Translation" made the crossing must-visit; illegally filmed car chase in the "Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift" in the crossing; Loyal dog "Hachi" story starred by Richard Gere brought people in tears; a hermit-like toilet cleaner's daily life was depicted in "Perfect Days". Social media also draws people in to Shibuya, but there're other attractions. Nauman elephant inhabited in the ancient times and Geisha culture once thrived. Now, it's a fashion hub of Japan and a youth culture centre with some City Pop related live houses, indie cinemas, dive bars, train station labyrinth for train spotters, "Japan's Silicon Valley" IT hub, sprouting high-rises, and more. In this tour, we will take a stroll in the town that is experiencing "once in a hundred years' revamping" to see the old and new of the ever evolving big city.

Yoko was an absolute delight! We had some unexpected flight delays, and she was incredibly flexible and able to pivot her schedule so we could still enjoy our tour. The kids absolutely loved her, which made the experience even more special for our family. She did a wonderful job helping us understand the neighborhood and the culture around us, and we learned so much in just a few hours. It was the perfect introduction to Tokyo, and we’re so grateful for her warmth and knowledge.

Yoko is an outstanding tour guide in every way. She helped us navigate the complexity of the Shibuya area which is undergoing major renovation so that station access is limited and the crowds are massive. We had the experience we were looking for, from the Scramble Crossing to the Geisha district, tiny out of the way bars and restaurants, nighttime photos of architecture and more. Her command of English is superb, and our conversations over dessert and tea/coffee were fascinating. I urge you to select Yoko for your bespoke tour in Tokyo. We sincerely hope to see her again in this wonderful city.

We had a terrific time with Yoko last evening. We started off with a delicious sushi dining experience near our hotel (the Grand Hyatt) and she was so helpful with the entire process. Then we walked all around the Shibuya area including the crossing as part of our personalized night tour. Yoko was fun to be with, knowledgeable, organized, and well spoken. This was our first day of our first time in Japan. My wife and I highly recommend Yoko for any visitors to Tokyo as you will surely be extremely satisfied with your choice of a guide.

Yoko did a great job considering we were a group of 10 and the weather was terrible !! She was extremely enthusiastic and if it’s architecture and train systems along with Shibuya history you’re interested in then this is the tour for you. Thank you again Yoko for your effort, we all appreciated it.
