My initial interest in Japan was sparked by the stories told by my boss - a first generation Japanese American - at my after school part time job in Seattle, Washington. Stories of his Japanese childhood in Iwakuni, and the experiences Japanese immigrants faced when they came to the United States impacted me and I went on to earn a BA in Secondary Education and Japanese history at Western Washington University and, while there, made my first trip to Japan in 1971 as a home-stay/study-abroad student. In my nearly forty five years in Japan since those days I have witnessed first-hand Japan's rapid economic development and its real estate and stock market bubble that burst in the late 80s bringing everything to a rapid halt. Since then, Japan's two plus lost decades continue to this day. My experience includes twenty years as a salaryman in a Japanese company and a teacher of Japanese Social Studies at Nishimachi International School. Now focused on Japan, her history, culture, and society, I am passionate about providing insightful and meaningful tours that create a vivid experience for visitors to take back home. Besides providing insightful and historically oriented Tokyo tours that I am happy to customise, I introduce people to other locations in Japan like Hakone, Nikko, Kamakura, Kyoto, and up the ancient Nakasendo that linked Edo - today's Tokyo - to Kyoto for over 265 years of the Edo period. Currently I am teaching tour guiding classes as well as A Japanese History class at Temple University, Tokyo Campus. I also continue my practice of Nihon Buyo, traditional Japanese dance, that has its origins in Kabuki, and am a certified practitioner of ikebana. My stage appearances have been featured on Japanese TV and in Japanese newspapers. BA in Secondary Ed. and Japanese History, Japanese Drivers License, Certificarte of Proficiency in Sogetsu Ikebana, 35 Years in Hanayagi School of Buyo - Japanese traditional dance, Long-Term-Permanent-Resident of Japan

Edo - the original name of today's Tokyo - was a vibrant and lively city of over 1. 2 million souls at its peak. We walk through the city's history from its foundation in 1590 to the present visiting often ignored sights that are crucial to understanding the modern city. The first day is devoted to the life of the warrior class and the distinctive culture that helps explain a great deal of modern Japan. Day two is devoted to the life of the peasant and their entertainments. Together, they are designed to give a basis for understanding the many curiosities that Japan presents to the uninitiated.

This tour was exactly what we were looking for. We are American and the guide is of American descent, so he was able to understand how to explain a new (to us) culture and gave us much guidance for the rest of the trip. We saw many things in a full two-day tour. It was a lot to absorb and when we told him to slow down so we could catch up he managed to do that and still get it all in.
Patrick was excellent showing us the city's history in two days. His background from US over 40 years ago allow him to see Japan from different prospectives. We now have a much better understandings in the customs and daily lives of Japan with reference to their history. Thx, Patrick.
This tour was fantastic!!!! Our guide Patrick was amazing! He is knowledgeable about every aspect of life in Tokyo!! He taught the way to use the metro card , and show all we asked for! We learned so much about Tokyo and Japan in general, thanks to Patrick. Thank you very much!
Fantastic knowledge of Japanese history and culture-wonderful communication skills
My wife and I spent two wonderful days with Patrick. He arrived promptly at our hotel and gave us an historical overview of the city (Edo) using old maps that set the stage for our tour. We were then off becoming very comfortable with the subway system. Because we chose Patrick for his historical knowledge, we saw most of the important sites from the imperial/shogun eras as well as Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. We also experienced shops, parks and neighborhoods linking the past to the present.
