Hello everyone, my name's Paolo and I'm an archaeologist and a licensed tour guide. I was born in Forlì, a small picturesque city located in Northern Italy - not far from Bologna. And it was there, in my childhood, where I took my first steps in the world of archaeology, going with my friends in search of fossils and other ancient objects. I graduated at the University of Bologna obtaining a degree in Cultural Heritage, then I completed the postgraduate school in Classical Archaeology at the University of Padua, then I moved to Rome. I never quit studying and improving my knowledge as a professional archaeologist working on field and research so I also a got a Phd in Classical Archaeology at the Ludwig Maximilians Universität of Munich (Germany), wonderfull experience! To follow my passion and my job I have lived in several cities in Italy and Greece, such as Rome and Pompeii. Since 2009 I have enjoyed living and working in Castellammare di Stabia too, a quaint maritime town near Pompeii - where you could say I have "landed" and remained ever since. I'm lucky to be responsible of the Roman site of Stabia for directing and coordinating excavations and restoration projects, teaming up with archaeologists and restorers from all over the world. I have also been a licensed tour guide of the Campania Region and Vatican city and Colosseum since 2014, so when I'm not involved with excavation work, I love to share my time and my knowledge with students, art lovers and tourists showing them the archaeological and artistic treasures of this enchanting corner of Italy. Now I live and work in Rome as I feel like it's my native city and always fascinated with the Ancient Rome since I was a child. The Ethernal city is absolutey magic in every its corner. I specialized in Roman archaeology and Rome it's my hometown where I feel home 100%. I look forward to showing you the best ones and live an amazing experience together exploring the best. What else can I say? I'm waiting for you here to spend some unforgettable days together! I graduated at the University of Bologna obtaining a degree in Cultural Heritage and then I completed the postgraduate specialization in Classical and Roman Archaeology at the University of Padova. I have a PhD in Classical Archaeology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany. Due to Italian rules, I'm licensed to guide you inside museums, archaeological areas, cities. I'm not a licensed driver. For tours including private transportation my associated professional driver will be at your disposal.

Overview of your Rome tour

If you're staying in Rome, take a chance to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum too! I will be your personal archaeologist for the day! I've been working as professional and field director and lived in that area for many years, and it's my 2nd home! Visiting those cities is a life experience to be enjoyed through a detailed tour. A tour I Pompeii and Herculaneum is a must if you stay in Italy. Nowhere else shall you see History in such conditions, neither in Rome! The stories behind these famous places lay bare as you wander around the streets entering houses as a city still alive. You will see the last moments in the lives of the people of Pompeii, forever captured by the erupting volcano. Herculaneum is much smaller, but even better preserved than Pompeii. While the latter had been covered in four to five meters of ashes, a 20 meters thick avalanche of muds had buried Herculaneum. It is still possible to see two-storey houses, carbonized wooden objects, intact paintings and beautiful mosaics. Ready to join me?

If I could give this tour 10 stars I would!!! From beginning to end, our day with Paolo was amazing. Our family of four (two adults and two teens) traveled to Rome in July and were looking for a unique way to see the sites that also allowed for us to get the most out of our time there. I am so glad we found this tour and booked it because it delivered all we expected and more!! After a seamless pickup at our rental apartment in Rome, we were whisked away to Pompeii. From the time we stepped foot outside our apartment Paolo had everything taken care of: the transportation, tickets, lunch recommendations, and all of the stories from Pompeii. Having such a knowledgeable professional share his passion and discoveries with us was nothing short of amazing. It was so incredibly hot (Italy during a July heat wave is no joke), but even that couldn't impact how much we enjoyed our day. The Herculaneum was much less busy, but no less exciting. Paolo made the whole day of history come alive for us in ways we never expected. It also seems that Paolo is somewhat of a local celebrity in Pompeii, and we found delight in all of the other guides and workers making it a point to come and say hello to him! You can tell he is truly passionate about discovering the secrets that Pompeii and Herculaneum still hold and we are so blessed we got to experience the cities through his eyes. Thank you Paolo for an unforgettable day!

Wow, our day with Paolo was amazing. We really can't recommend him highly enough. He is extremely knowledgeable and patient and he was able to engage a diverse group (different ages and abilities) with everything we saw. Pompeii was of course impressive, but Herculaneum was extra special. It was less busy and had some fascinating things to see and learn about. If you go to this area, make sure you choose the tour that goes to both sites. We learned so much from Paolo and thought he was simply fantastic. Interestingly, everyone at these places seemed to know him and they kept saying to us, "You have the best guide!" We can't help but agree!

This tour was excellent and we couldn't recommend it enough! We really enjoyed experiencing the differences between Pompeii and Herculaneum in the one day. Paolo was extremely knowledgeable, informative and interactive and it was also very interesting to hear about his work at these sites. We felt we had the best guide possible for this experience. Our driver for the day Marco was also fantastic with a very comfortable vehicle for the trip.

I knew I had lucked out with Paolo when I saw he was free for the dates I needed. He's an archeologist my profession and a superb and experienced tour guide. It was my dream to see both Pompeii and Herculaneum on my trip to Rome and he made it come true. He's excellent at walking you through the cities and explaining the history and social life behind these cities. The people and their homes absolutely came to life. Like so many other people, I can't recommend him enough.
