The building's history started in the 18th century when Count Anton Grassalkovich had it built as his family residence. Then in 1867, it was given to the royal couple. The palace and its surroundings were especially beloved by Elisabeth (Sissi), who used to spend here lots of time going for a horse ride or a walk. Since she hated being in Vienna, this castle became her place of refuge. About twenty years back it was reopened as an interesting museum.
