Follow me to hear stories from one of the darker periods of Hungarian history and discover the heroes and villains of World War II, Nazism, the Cold War occupation and the entire Communist era, until Hungary's peaceful transition to parliamentary democracy in the late 1980s. This walking tour presents Budapest in a special way, where the historical perspective is narrowed to the ups and downs of the 20th century. My grandfather fought on the Eastern Front in World War II. My dad lived through the toughest years of Soviet oppression in the 1950s and was one of the teenager freedom fighters during the 1956 anti-Communist uprising. I myself grew up in an era when every aspect of people's life was dominated by Soviet-dictated rules. Believe me, I have a lot of personal stories to share with you during this tour!
- Meeting at the agreed location - Travel/walk to Liberty Square. Visit Soviet War Obelisk (1945) and Cold War Bunker entrance (1953) - Photo at historical USA Embassy Building, Carl Lutz Memorial, statues of President R. Reagan and G. W. Bush - Walk to nearby Parliament Square. Visit main venues of the siege of Budapest by Russians (1944-45) and Hungary's anti-Communist uprising in 1956 - Walk to the Shoe (Holocaust) Memorial on the Danube - Travel on red bus Number 70 ("the Stalin bus") to the favorite rally ground of the Hungarian Communist Party 1949-1989, the venue of Labor Day marches and military parades - Travel to the "House of Terror" Museum of Nazism & Communism. Photo at the symbolic Iron Curtain, a fragment of the Berlin Wall and portraits of Hungarian heroes who died for freedom during the Cold War - Optional at the end of the tour: visit the "House of Terror" Museum of Nazism & Communism (individual visits only, with audio-guide, open 10AM to 6PM Tue-Sun)
