My name is Petra, like the city in Jordan. I'm an experienced tour guide since 2015 and also licensed tour guide in the largest European Synagogue. This thematical tour is recommended for those who are interested in the second part of the 20th century history. Your vague feeling - that Hungary is a post-communist country - will be explained, illustrated and elaborated. Historical background to sites will be added, with a nice balance between information and fun facts. Hungary was maybe the most special part of the Eastern block at the time. Between the true "red" countries and the still free Austria we were called the happiest barrack. How could this country have a Communist/Socialist regime and Coca-Cola at the same time? If you want to get acquainted with personal stories about history, religion, holidays, school, shopping, media, housing, and everyday life, come for an easy walk in the Pest downtown. As your guide and also as a descendant of people who lived through this era, I can provide you plenty of surprising and important facts about the Communist time of Hungary.
Petra is fantastic. She really knows the history of this place. Come prepared to listen because she comes prepared with stories about life under Communism here. Many of these stories are from her own family. I thought I didn't need a tour because I know a lot about this period. I was wrong. Stories, jokes, information that you will not get from a book were all part of the wonderful tour. Not to be missed.
Petra did a fantastic job. Vary knowledgeable. At the start of the tour she chatted with us to make sure she understood what we wanted to see and learn about. We told her we would be going on a river cruise in a few days and she adjusted the tour to make sure there was no duplication. She added some other things like the mini sculptures, they were fantastic. At the end of the tour she took the time to walk us to a local restaurant that was reasonable price and good food. Highly recommend Petra!
Petra was very easy to communicate with prior to our tour and to set up a meeting point. We were a group of 12, and she did a great job of transmitting the information around the topic.
I had the most amazing day learning about Communism with Petra! She was funny and engaging, and did a great job telling a story about both the good and bad aspects of life in this era. I was impressed by Petra's depth of knowledge, about WHY certain historical events happened, which brought them to life. She even helped me take the train to my next destination at the end of the tour! Thank you Petra!
