In 2024 we are about to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landing in Normandy that led to the liberation of France. Due to a strategic situation, Bordeaux was occupied by the Nazi army from 1940 to 1944. This occupation has left some remains in the region, especially the huge submarine base, which hasn’t been destroyed since the end of the war. Erected to shelter the famous German U-BOOT, the submarine base has turned into a cultural exhibition area. It’s now the world’s biggest immersive art center (13 000m²) and contributes to the new economic development of the northern part of the city.
If you have purchased your tickets to visit the exhibition “Bassins des Lumières” and want to know more about the construction of this amazing military place, I will be happy to tell you everything about the transformation of this part of the port of Bordeaux. Because I am not allowed to talk inside the building (it’s technically impossible due to the music of the show), we’ll stay outside, so we’ll have a good overall view to understand the different techniques used to build this reinforced concrete monster.
