Quilotoa volcano is located in the west of the Ecuadorian Andes, its caldera with almost 3 km in diameter was formed 800 years ago after an eruption and subsequent collapse of the volcano. The caldera of the volcano is about 250 m deep, due to minerals and algae, the surface of the lagoon has greenish and bluish tones when sunlight reaches the water. In the Quilotoa you can perform various activities such as walking to the interior of the crater, horseback riding, hiking and kayaking.
I was joined by my two friends by our tour guide Juan Pablo. He was more than willing to share his knowledge with us. We were able to fill the time between lengthy car rides with wonderful knowledge about Juan Pablo’s family. The rainy weather shortened our hike on the volcano. The hike degree of difficulty was a bit more challenging than described. Also work to better organize the availability of mules for rides either up or down the volcano crater.
Juan Pablo is an amazing guide. He is knowledgeable, patient and kind. We had a fantastic day hiking and sightseeing amongst the east Andean volcanoes.
Juan Pablo was a great guide. Our family was in Quito for a 2 days so we wanted to see as much as possible. Juan Pablo provided a lot of information during our drive as well as our hike down and up the volcano. We really enjoyed the day with him and would highly recommend him as a tour guide.
We had a very good day with Juan to visit a volcano with a view of a lake inside a collapsed crater. It was a long drive but we made a few stops such as at a very good coffee shop and to a shop of an indigenous woman who had arts and crafts for sale. The weather was misty, but we lucked out and saw the lake. Then Juan took us to a picturesque little farm which was a small inn with a delicious lunch including food items new to us and very good. We learned much about the customs of the area.
If you can only choose one tour in Ecuador, definitely pick this one! We had a fun and safe time time with Juan Pablo. The downhill part in Quilotoa was very slippery, but with his tips and help I made it to the bottom safely and had a good time. He's also skillful at taking pictures, so we now have many great photos to relive those amazing moments in Ecuador!
Juan Pablo was a GREAT tour guide. His communication prior to the tour was excellent. He was punctual, informative, flexible, kind, helpful, and accommodating. The tour was wonderful. It was a perfect day! Highly, highly recommend.
Pick up at the hotel. We headed south through the avenue of the volcanoes, we made our first stop in the market of Pujilí. We continue until we reach Tigua where the local community makes masks in wood and paint paintings in sheepskins. We passed through the town of Zumbahua and reached the Crater del Quilotoa at 4, 000 meters above sea level. From here we start the journey towards the lagoon located at 3, 500 masl, here you can kayak. Then we returned riding on mules to the top. Later we visited the artisan market of Quilotoa. We return to Quito.
