Is this really the Hungarian Pompei?
If you like roman ruins, this is your tour in Hungary! Between the 1. and 4 centuries AC. this part of Hungary was an important province of the Roman Empire, and its border was the river Danube. The river makes a bend here, and this was #1 defending town in the area called Aquincum. With roughly 50 thousand inhabitants in the military and civilian town of Aquincum we have the ruins of 2 amphitheatres, the forum, many baths and temples, dwelling houses, streets, plumbing and sewer network and the city walls.
There were about 50 factories selling in Aquincum: metal, glass, tannery, pottery. In the visitor centre there is a spectacular display of the fascinating objects found here surviving 2000 years. We proudly host the original parts of an amazing instument: a water organ! You can see and even hear the sound of the reconstructed organ in the exhibition. Finally, for kids there are good virtual games on roman life.
THIS TOUR IS NOT RUNNING ON MONDAYS, AS THE RUINS ARE CLOSED!
After a short drive from Budapest centre, first we visit the ruins of a huge amphitheater. Gladiators, wild beasts and parading soldiers entertained the free and proud Roman citizens of Aquincum and even visiting Roman emperors like Marcus Aurelius or Caracalla. We'll also pass the ruins of the military town & bath, the city gates, and on request a once pretty and luxurious residence called villa of Hercules.
The highlight is the vast, open-air ruin garden of Aquincum civilian town. Walking down the 2000 years old stones we see remains of merchant houses with kitchen and facilities, meeting places and shrines, courtyards and fountains. Visit the meat market and the Forum, place of state religion, where sacrifices to Jupiter were given. Take an imaginery plunge in the big public bath with amazing floor and wall heating. Tombstones and altars tell us stories about everyday romans' everyday life. We can also visit the reconstructed Painter's House, elegant home of a Roman family in Aquincum.

Watch out Pompeii, Buda has Aquincumi! Katalin was on time, professional, friendly, kind, and very knowledgeable about the history of Budapest, and of course she knew all about the Roman ruins. We really enjoyed this outing immensely, and we learned a lot about history, archeology, engineering, and the daily life of the ancients, and even some about the modern era. Our family says thumbs up!
