Welcome to the City of London! I'm lucky enough to live right here in the Square Mile and I can't wait to show you around. While 500, 000 people come to work in the City of London every day, only 9, 000 of us actually live here. So if you're looking for an insider tour of this magical neighbourhood, then look no further. A writer by trade, I love a good story - and over the pandemic I discovered that the City of London is packed with them. When the streets emptied out, I spent hours just walking. Every time I stepped outside, I spotted something different: Roman remains, a secret garden, a plaque marking the spot where Shakespeare once lived. It inspired me to discover more about the Square Mile, and to train as a professional guide. The City is the oldest part of London, with 2, 000 years of history, culture and architecture to discover. But I also love the 21st century version with its skyscraper viewing platforms and seriously good coffee. Join me on a tour and experience the City like a local. On this walking tour, you'll explore Jewish heritage in the City of London from the 11th century right up to the present day. The Square Mile is the oldest part of the capital, and the story of the Jewish community in London starts here. This walk traces the history of Jewish people from their arrival in London at the invitation of William the Conqueror, through the expulsion of 1290 and their return nearly 400 years later. Along the way, you'll hear stories of famous London Jewish characters such as Daniel Mendoza, Moses Montefiore and Paul Reuter, and discover the site of the original Jewish cemetery where the iconic Barbican estate now stands.
We'll meet outside Barbican station, close to the centre of London's very first Jewish community. Our route will include: - the site of the medieval Jewish cemetery - the original Jewish quarter of the City - Mansion House, which was home to the City of London's first Jewish Lord Mayor - Bevis Marks, the oldest synagogue in the UK in continuous use - the Kindertransport statue at Liverpool Street station This is an outdoor walk and doesn't include any indoor visits. The itinerary can be customised on request – get in touch!
