Welcome to the City of London! I'm lucky enough to live right here in the Square Mile and I can't wait to show you around. While 500, 000 people come to work in the City of London every day, only 9, 000 of us actually live here. So if you're looking for an insider tour of this magical neighbourhood, then look no further. A writer by trade, I love a good story - and over the pandemic I discovered that the City of London is packed with them. When the streets emptied out, I spent hours just walking. Every time I stepped outside, I spotted something different: Roman remains, a secret garden, a plaque marking the spot where Shakespeare once lived. It inspired me to discover more about the Square Mile, and to train as a professional guide. The City is the oldest part of London, with 2, 000 years of history, culture and architecture to discover. But I also love the 21st century version with its skyscraper viewing platforms and seriously good coffee. Join me on a tour and experience the City like a local. The oldest neighbourhood in London, the City survived both the Great Fire and the Blitz to become a global financial powerhouse today. It's home to an iconic cathedral, soaring skyscrapers and ancient Roman remains, all packed into one square mile. And did you know that it has its own unique system of government too? The City of London is like nowhere else in the world, and this tour is the perfect introduction. We'll wander down alleyways, stroll medieval streets, and look up at gleaming new towers. You can step back in time at London's oldest church, visit a magical movie location, and take a selfie or two in atmospheric ruins. A resident of the Square Mile, I learn something new about the City every time I step out of my front door. On this tour, I'll share some of my favourite stories and local spots as we explore this unique neighbourhood together.
We really enjoyed the City of London tour with Susannah! We learned so much about the history of London outside the more common tourist destinations, and Susannah was fun and kept the tour so interesting. She also did a great job of pointing out things that were interesting to us specifically. And Susannah was kind and thoughtful too, so we're big fans. Susannah is a personable, highly knowledgeable and engaging guide. She met us on a chilly January day and took us on a journey through history, from Roman London to Saxon times, the Middle Ages, the Victorian era--with everything from a church archway dating to 675 to Mr. Scrooge's counting house and cite of the founding of the stock market. Her passion for the area and desire to share it with us made this tour remarkable. The experience truly exceeded our expectations.
We'll meet at Tower Hill station, in one of the most intriguing corners of the Square Mile. Our route will include: - the oldest church in the City of London - a monument to heroic self-sacrifice in one of the City's most charming hidden parks - the site of London's first coffee house - the remains of the Roman wall We'll finish outside St Paul's Cathedral - the London icon that dominates the City's skyline. There will be plenty of time to take photos and we'll stop for refreshments around halfway through - coffee, a snack, or perhaps even a pint in one of the City's historic pubs. The itinerary can be customised on request.
