Stonehenge, Salisbury and Avebury

This full-day tour brings together Stonehenge, Salisbury and Avebury — three of southern England’s most memorable destinations. For those of you visiting on Tuesdays and Saturdays you're in for a special treat since this is market day, first started 800 years ago. Along the way, we follow the crystal-clear River Avon, pass thatched cottages and flint-built churches, and uncover the landscapes that shaped Britain’s most famous prehistoric monument. Stonehenge and Avebury together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while Avebury is home to the largest prehistoric stone circle in the world. We will travel through the Avon valley, where the gin-clear water of a rare chalk river runs beside classic Wiltshire villages, with their thatched roofs and churches built from local flint. We will also see a Saxon church, a dramatic chalk figure carved into the hillside.

A day out in the county of Wiltshire. Our first stop is Salisbury cathedral, famous for its spire and a copy of Magna Carta. Tuesdays and Saturdays include the market in the city centre. Next we drive under the flank of Old Sarum, an iron age fortress, through Woodford Valley next to the gin clear waters of the River Avon through thatched Wiltshire villages and flint built churches. The World Heritage site of Stonehenge is next where, in the company of your guide, we explore the stones together. Time for lunch, maybe in a sixteenth century coaching inn or how about fish and chips? Next we head north and drive over the Marlborough Downs to see a Saxon Chapel and a chalk figure carved in the hillside before coming to the quarry from whence Stonehenge and nearby Avebury was built. Nearby is Avebury Stone Circle where, in the company of your guide, we visit the stones together. Our drive home on the old coaching road takes us through the market towns of Marlborough and Hungerford.
