Follow in the footsteps of Jewish immigrants through the ages that will give an insight into the struggles, discrimination and battles the new arrivals were faced with as they tried to integrate into British life. The primary focus of this experience is the arrival and assimilation of Jewish communities and their positive influence on British culture, food, and society. What would life be like without chicken soup and beigles?! I draw my knowledge from my own Jewish heritage, and also due to working within the East End of London during large parts of my life. This tour will take us through a timeline from Medieval London to the pogroms of eastern Europe, the atrocities of the Holocaust and the struggles of other communities of immigrants that have found refuge in London's East-End multi-cultural society, that has now become the centre of some of the finest south Asian cuisine and creative street art. The following itinerary could be customized upon request:
We may go into some short walks between the listed sites on this itinerary: ·After we meet in your lodging or preferred spot in the City of London, I'll take you to the starting spot of the tour, the Guildhall. ·From here, we'll go to Fredricks Place and see a plaque honoring Benjamin Disraeli. ·Afterwards, we'll pass by Bevis Marks Synagogue. (We're restricted from going inside because of current reconstructions. ) ·Later, we'll visit the Petticoat lane market. ·Next, we'll venture into Spitalfields, the old Jewish Quarter and haunt of Jack the Ripper. ·We'll then get to Liverpool Street Station and see the Kindertransport memorial. ·Later, we'll cover Brune Street, where a jewish soup Kitchen was settled in the 20th century. ·We'll then pass by Princelet Street, the site of the first Yiddish theatre. ·Next, Brick Lane, once the heart of the Jewish community. ·Then on to the last stop of this tour: one of London's finest beigel shops. ·At last, we'll go back to your central London dropoff point.
