Hi, I'm Mary, an expert London Blue Badge Guide. It is such a joy, at last, to have found a job that allows me to spend time sharing my love of English history, people, culture and buildings with visitors from around the world. You won't regret choosing me to help you get the most from you and your family's precious holiday time. I know how to put the 'story' into history, to bring the past into the present, and to add sunshine into the rainiest of London days. But what of my own history? I spent my early years in California, moved to Switzerland when I was 9 (where I learned French) and moved with my parents and sisters to Oxfordshire for my teenage years. As a teenager, I had a thirst for adventure, opting for a degree in Modern Chinese Studies at Leeds University, part of which involved heading off for a year's study in Shanghai China aged 19. After finishing university, I held a variety of jobs as a journalist on popular and technical magazines in and around London's famous Fleet Street. Next, I moved to Brighton to bring up my children, and worked there for many years as a Communications Manager for the National Health Service and others, before deciding to take a different path, and undergo the rigorous training required to become an elite London Blue Badge Tourist Guide. The combination of my lifelong interests, motivation and experience makes me the ideal person to bring your family and friends the very best of London and other nearby destinations. The way I see it, the office used to be my world and now, the world is my office. I look forward to meeting you and showing you London and England's famous places, faces and spaces! Overview of your London tour
Is it a tower? Is it a castle? Is it a palace? During its thousand year history, the Tower of London has been all those things and more. And it's not just a single tower, but a vast collection of them, each with its own stories and, even, ghosts. But never fear, I will guide you safely around this unique World Heritage site and introduce you to the priceless splendours of the Crown Jewels (entry included). And in amongst the treasures, there'll be tales of treachery and torture as we walk in the footsteps of the ill-fated Queen Anne Boleyn and others. Following a swift coffee (if you wish) in the Tower's café, we'll cross the famous Tower Bridge, then head along the banks of the River Thames to Southwark, where bears were once baited, beer was brewed and dockers unloaded cargoes of silks and spices. We say goodbye at the foodie heaven of Borough Market, home to fads and flavours from around the world. But before we part, don't forget to ask me for advice on how to spend the rest of your day.
Your London tour itinerary
9. 30am/2pm* meet beside Tower of London Ticket Office Enter Tower for a c. 2-hour** guided visit including: - The Execution site - memorial to three Queens of England among others - The Bloody Tower - home to tales of despair and foul play - Traitors' Gate - where prisoners arrived to await an uncertain fate - Medieval Apartments - living quarters fit for a king? - Photo opportunities with the colourful Yeoman Warders and Royal Guards There will also be time for you to explore the Crown Jewels and the White Tower (as guiding is not permitted, I will give you a comprehensive introduction before you go in) Following (optional) a coffee break, it's a guided walk across Tower Bridge and through lively Southwark, ending at Borough Market where you will find plenty of options for lunch or an early dinner. * Depending on whether you opt for a morning or afternoon visit, and subject to Tower opening/closing times. ** As tour is outdoors, the weather may affect our itinerary/how long we spend at attractions
