Perched high above the White Cliffs, Dover Castle is often called the “Key to England” because it has guarded the narrowest point of the English Channel for more than nine centuries. The castle was largely built by King Henry II in the late 12th century, creating one of the most formidable fortresses in Europe. At its heart stands the massive Great Tower, designed both as a royal palace and a symbol of royal power. The site’s military history stretches back even further, with Roman remains and an Anglo-Saxon church still surviving within the walls. Dover Castle played important roles during the medieval period, the Napoleonic Wars, and both World Wars. Deep beneath the castle lie extensive tunnels, used as a military headquarters and later as a command centre during the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940.
