If you are intrigued by Covent Garden, and want to know more about the lives of the legendary actors, writers and urban designers who shaped its history, this tour is ideal for you! Join me as I unfold an entrancing epic narrative of the heart of London revealing Covent Garden's oscillation between wealth and dissolution across many centuries, the journey enhanced by literary readings inspired by the locality. Explore Covent Garden through the eyes of artists, writers, architects and imaginative urban visionaries such as Thomas Neale, Inigo Jones and Nicholas Saunders, writer of the 1970s 'Alternative London' guides, and inspiration for the transformation and development of once derelict Neal's Yard. Hear tell of actors and Kings, Pearly Kings, criminals and rebels, not forgetting famous royal mistress, Nell Gwyne! Enjoy a private tour taking us back in time, illustrated by the artworks of Hogarth, and enhanced by literary extracts bringing London's best writers, and characters to life before your eyes.
- Starting at the Sundial, Seven Dials, the focal point of a neighbourhood rich with chequered history & intrigue, we will learn about the urban developers, notorious pickpockets, & Chartist rebels, before calling into the vibrant Neal's Yard. - Passing by The London Film School, we explore alleyways old & new, the Apples and Jubilee markets, Drury Lane, & St Paul's Piazza. - We stop at sites of cultural interest: St Paul's church & its enchanting garden, the Royal Opera House, and some of London's most fascinating theatres. We focus on the history & legends of The Fortune Theatre, the venue for the gothic Women in Black, and the stunning Theatre Royal Drury Lane. - The tour takes in stunning views along the Thames, East, & West, continuing to the peripheries of Covent Garden. - Optional: Visit the Sir John Soane Museum, an eclectic curation of exhibits collected across a lifetime, or include a one-hour in-depth tour of The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. The tour is entirely on foot as we are covering a relatively compact area. There will be a chance to sit at different points to hear about Covent Garden's history, whilst taking a rest. You have the option of an extension for coffee, tea and conversation.
