My name is Orquidea and I am a private local guide here in Porto, Portugal, numerous winner of "Best European Destination!" I am Portuguese and have lived here my whole life. I became a tour guide because I love meeting foreigners, showing them my country, giving them an insight to Portuguese history, food and culture with informative and personalized tours. Although Portugal is small, it is very diverse allowing you an incredible opportunity to discover all that it has to offer; excellent architecture, delicious food & wine, exciting festivals, great weather, hospitable people and much more and I am here to help experience all of these! I offer tours throughout northern Portugal (Porto, Douro Valley, Guimaraes, Braga, Viana do Castelo, to name a few) and into the centre by request (Coimbra, Aveiro, Fatima, Obidos, Nazare, Lisbon). Not only will you visit the highlights but you will witness the locals, how they live, what they eat, their customs and how the regions have been shaped to reflect by these. The city has remains of what was once a typical Jewish Quarter in the Middle Ages: steps, narrow streets and balconied houses. After passing the largest synagogue standing on the Iberian Peninsula "Mekor Haim"/The Fountain of Life, founded by Captain Arthur Barros Bastos in 1938, you will visit the newly opened Jewish Museum and learn all about the Jewish Heritage in Portugal. Then we will walk through the narrow streets and UNESCO centre from the Sé Cathedral, where the first synagogue was built, to Montes dos Olivais where the Jewish Quarter was situated learning about the city itself as well as is Jewish Heritage. Once you cross the Douro River, witness the breathtaking setting of the city itself, you will finish in a port wine cellar for a tour and tasting to appreciate not only the port wine but its influence on this region (optional). Note: The synagogue invites members to attend Shabbat on Saturday (to be organized through the synagogue directly
Our guide arranged a visit to the Porto synagogue and gave us a thorough tour of the city. She took us to an excellent restaurant for lunch and then to a Port wine tasting at Churchill's Port distillery. She had a good command of the English language.
We had a wonderful Jewish as well as cultural tour of Porto with Orquidea. She met us at our boat, on time, and was ready to start a great tour. Some walking and some driving. There is not a great deal of Jewish history in Porto, but she found and showed us what was available to see as well as went into the history of why there is very little Jewish Heritage left after the inquisition. After a wonderful lunch we did a Port tasting and then returned us to our hotel. A great day, highly recommend her.
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Orquídea. She was enthusiastic, a pleasure to be with, very informative and she spoke excellent English. She drove us to sites on the outskirts of Porto (she is an amazing driver - superbly navigating the narrow, hilly streets of Porto in a spacious, clean van) but we were also able to tour most places on foot. We learned a lot about the history of Porto and Portugal (with an emphasis on Jewish history). We highly recommend Orquídea as a guide.
Orquidea was a wonderful guide. She was pleasant and very knowledgeable. We were able to visit the Synagogue in Porto which was a treat. She took us all around Porto which wasn't easy due to the amazingly heavy traffic. Her car was a Mercedes and very comfortable and she is a terrific driver. She explained the various sights in Porto clearly as her English is excellent. She took us to a Port wine tasting as well. If you want a terrific tour of Jewish Porto, Orquidea is an excellent choice.
Orquidea was very prompt. She has an easy going pleasant personality and was definitely flexible. This was a great tour. Plus she arranged a private tour at the synagogue. We saw much more than we would have seen on our own. It was a wonderful day! It's a beautiful city. Thank you.
