Hi, my name is Afonso and I'll be your host! I was born at the West of Portugal, at a beach close to Peniche and raised between this region and the north of Portugal at a small village called Chaves. I moved then to Porto to take my degree in Tourism. During the following years I have worked in big events production and 14 years ago I moved to Gstaad - a fancy Ski Resort at the Suisse Alps. During the winter I still escort my guests through the amazing landscape of The Alps doing one of my passions - snowboarding. Due to my connection to different regions of Portugal, during the last years I've started being more interested in Gastronomy and Wines and particularly by the Douro Region, so in 2018 and after taking the level 1 of the course WSET - Wine and Spirits Education Trust I've launched the Douro Call Experience - a non-touristic tour through the outstanding landscapes of the Douro region, plenty of wine and local food! I have depth knowledge of my country, a warm personality and a great sense of humour and I'm also passionate for photography, surfing and travelling. I love welcoming guests at my country and be able to share stories and experiences, while enjoying an amazing landscape and world class wine! The Douro Valley and Amarante Tour is a full immersion on what the Douro Valley and the North have the best - amazing landscapes, great wines and delicious food. I'm passionate about this region and for me the Douro Valley is the best place to welcome guests and it's where I'm able to share my wine knowledge and experiences while you share yours. Our day will start at a hidden family-run winery, where we will learn more about the wine production, visit the warehouse and end with an amazing and private tasting. After lunch we will explore the other side of the valley - Pinhão. At a smaller family-run winery we will do a second wine tasting while enjoying my favorite viewpoint which is considered one of the best 6 views in the world by BBC Travel. On our way to Porto we will stop at Amarante and visit a typical "tasca" owned by António. This tasca is one of my favorite places to taste some of the best Portuguese products while appreciating some "vinho verde", produced locally by the owner.
We booked two tours with Afonso. Due to flight cancellations and an injury, Afonso was very flexible to make sure we could still do both tours. Afonso is very knowledgeable about Porto and all the surrounding areas and seems to know everyone. This trip to the Douro valley we exactly what we were looking for - personal, local, extensive. Book with Afonso; you won’t be disappointed.
This tour was spectacular and worth every dollar/euro! Afonso showed us unique quinta’s. We had a fantastic day listening to Afonso sharing his knowledge about the history of the Douro Valley and answering our endless questions.
We were three girlfriends traveling through Portugal . Afonso took us on a full day tour through the Douro Valley .We could not have asked for a better Tour Guide. He is a true wine aficionado. He is so knowledgeable about the different Quintas . He was very responsive to all messages prior to meeting. We spent the day tasting wine, viewing the valley , and hearing salient points of Portuguese history . He knew the perfect places to take amazing photos. Day 2 he picked us up for our transfer to Lisbon . We made a stop at Obidos, a quick toast, and taste of Ginja . Then to lunch at a fabulous fish restaurant by the beach at Peniche. Afonso is knowledgeable, funny and charming. We spent two days with him and he was so easy to be with. We were pleasantly surprised with all the little fine touches. By day two we felt like family. We would highly recommend him to anyone visiting Porto.

We had a wonderful day with Alfonso. The tour was exactly as it was described, right down to the photography. We had terrific discussions along the way on a vast array of subjects and I suspect the tour lasted even longer than we expected because of that. Our last stop was at a lovely and very local tasca for charcuterie and Vinho Verde which was the perfect way to end the day. We couldn’t recommend Alfonso more highly!
- Pick up at your accommodation - Our day will be passed at the outstanding landscapes of the Douro region - World Heritage Site. We will visit from the main villages Régua and Pinhão to the endless narrow streets of the valley. - Stop in one of the most beautiful viewpoints at the Douro Valley - Visit and tasting at a hidden and family-run winery, including a private tasting. - After lunch (at a local restaurant in Régua) we will explore the other side of the valley, Pinhão. - Here, at a smaller family-run winery we will do a second tasting of wines and local products such as honey and olive oil. - At the end of the day we will stop at Amarante, a bucolic and cozy city with natural features which surround the city - the great Serra do Marão, rising above the city and the River Tâmega. Here at a local tasca we will do a degustation of portuguese products and "vinho verde" produced by the owner at his property. - Drop of at your accommodation
