Did you know that the the ground level of the ancient city was much lower than today? Let's discover together the many evidences from the past that are still hidden under modern streets & buildings. As a native of Rome and an expert tour guide, I will give you unique insights and share interesting details with you. I crafted this tour to encompass both outdoors and indoors visits. One of the indoor visits will be into a 13th century church, which has two underground levels that actually date back as far as the 1st century, and is currently managed by an Irish community of friars. Going down it will be for you like a journey back with time, up to the period of the Colosseum's inauguration. On the other hand, an outdoor visit will be to Coelium hill, a great place to learn about daily life in the Ancient Rome. Dress code: you're not allowed inside churches wearing shorts, mini-skirts, or with bare shoulders (women, men & kids). I recommend you wear comfortable shoes!
-Once we've gathered, we will start our tour exploring St Clement's church and its underground levels, which is just a few steps away from the Colosseum. ·On the first level, we'll see a IV Century Basilica. ·On the 2nd level, we'll se a pagan temple dedicated to the Persian God Mithras, god of soldiers and gladiators. -Later on, we will continue by exploring Roman houses on the Coelium hill, a complex archaeological site. These houses belonged to patricians families, living in a residential area near the monumental side of the city. -Next, we'll walk along the Circus Maximus and then get to the old marketplace of Rome (Forum Boarium) which was one of the main commercial centers of Rome, where meat, vegetables, animals where sold. ·On arrival to the area, we'll admire some of the oldest temples still standing from the past, like that of Hercules Victor. -At last, we'll explore 3 underground temples of pagan religion dedicated to the gods Spes (Hope), Janus, and Juno Sospita (St Nicolas' in prison).
