Overview of your Chania tour
As a professional historian and avid collector, I specialise in modern history. I start the tour in the Souda Bay area, where I will explain the basics and the hidden information that will help you understand the aspects of the battle, why the Axis forces attacked Crete, who fought rearguard, the role of locals, and the mistakes that led to the ANZAC troops' evacuation to Alexandria. I will then start driving and taking you to the South. Various stops will be made to clarify the route the troops followed in late May 1941 to march to the harbour of Chora Sfakion. Using historical documents and comparing then-and-now photos, you will grasp the troops' hardships during evacuation. A visit to a war museum full of war relics will help you understand the atrocities of war as we progress towards Imbros Gorge and the main port of Evacuation, clarifying your questions along the way. Upon arrival, we pay our respects to the ANZAC memorial before relaxing, overlooking the South Cretan sea. Lest we Forget!
