Dubrovnik Jewish Heritage Walk

Join me on a guided walk through Dubrovnik’s Jewish heritage, exploring the stories, struggles, and contributions of one of the oldest Sephardic communities in Europe. Starting at Pile Gate, we’ll visit Kolorina Bay before entering the Old City to uncover hidden landmarks, historical residences, and centuries-old traditions woven into Dubrovnik’s fabric. The tour concludes with a visit to the second-oldest synagogue still in use in Europe, nestled in the heart of the Jewish Street. We begin our journey at Pile Gate, the main western entrance to Dubrovnik’s Old City, where you’ll get an overview of the city’s layered history. From there, we take a short walk to Kolorina Bay, a scenic and symbolic spot that sets the stage for the story of arrivals, resilience, and refuge. Entering the Old City, we weave through narrow stone streets, passing significant locations tied to the city’s Jewish community — including hidden corners, architectural details, and former residences that echo centuries of life and legacy. As we explore the heart of the Old City, you’ll hear about the community’s relationship with the Republic of Ragusa, moments of hardship and protection, and the unique status Jews held throughout different periods. The tour culminates in Jewish Street, where we visit the Dubrovnik Synagogue, one of the oldest Sephardic synagogues still in use in Europe — a quiet and powerful place to end our story.
