The City of London is over 2000 years old. It has experienced many disasters - the Plague, The Great Fire of 1666, and the blitz during the second World War - but each time the City has been rebuilt and restored - and, like the pheonix on the south facing side of Sir Christopher Wren's iconic St Paul's Cathedral, the City has always risen again through the ashes and has come back bigger, better and stronger - the City is now the number one Financial and Business centre in the world. The City is unique - it is separate from the rest of London and has its own form of Government and its very own Lord Mayor. It is a tantalising mix of the old and the new - nestled amongst the towering skyscrapers and steel towers are medieval churches, secret parks and parts of the ancient Roman wall. Let me show you this fascinating City - we will walk down tiny medieval alleyways, see the fabulous Guildhall Yard which is the heart of the City and hear some amazing tales of the people who used to live here.
- We will start at the Monument - the largest single standing stone column in the world, built to remember the Great Fire of London in 1666. - Pudding Lane - Hear how the fire started and why it burned for over 4 days and 4 nights. - We will walk up some tiny narrow medieval streets to a beautiful ruined church and a memorial to the Blitz (1940-1941) - Visit a beautiful medieval market place - a site of magic (think Harry Potter!) and history. - The site of the oldest coffee shop - and where Scrooge's counting house in Charles Dickens 'A Christmas Carol' was sited. - The first shopping centre - built in 1567 - a place for Royal proclamations. - The Bank of England and why there is a secret garden in the middle of it. - A memorial to Shakespeare. - Guildhall Yard. - A secret park to heroic Londoners who lost their lives saving those of others. - A secret garden where you can see two reflections of St Pauls Cathedral.
