Hello, I'm Jenny and I would love to share with you my knowledge and passion for the City of London. Built on the footprint of the Old Roman wall, there has been a City here for 2000 years! It is called the Square Mile because of this footprint and it is packed with history, amazing buildings both old and new and many quirky facts. Let me show you the well known parts and the less well known - and some of the hidden and secret pockets of the City that you would never know were there. As a professional actor, I love telling a story and communicating the City's rich history to people in the most interesting and fun way. I won't bombard you with dates but I will tell you the stories of the people behind the amazing places we will visit - I will tell you the stories of ordinary Londoners who lost their lives whilst saving the life of someone else- often a complete stranger. Let me introduce you to the men who made sure that Shakespeare's work was saved for all to enjoy - it is 400 years since Shakespeare's first Folio was published. Let me tell you about three times elected Lord Mayor whose legacy is still doing good and helping people 600 years on from his death in 1423. The City is a world class financial district and I will tell you how this came to be and I will take you to the place where the first cup of coffee was sold in the City of London and These coffee shops lay the foundations for the Financial Services of the City of London and were hugely influential in shaping the City into the World class Financial centre that it is today. There are so many wonderful buildings and people whose lives have shaped the City of London and I would love to walk you around the City and introduce you to some of these amazing places. My interests are people, acting, communicating, music and literature. I also love devising bespoke tours for people - so if you have a particular interest in the City then contact me and I will devise a walk around your particular interests! I am looking forward to meeting you. This 2000 year old City - also called 'The Square Mile' has suffered many disasters and set backs and has, each time come back better and stronger than ever. Let me tell you of the devastating fire which destroyed 80% of the City and of the man - Sir Christopher Wren - who rebuilt it. We will visit some beautiful places and Monuments - each of which has a darker side to them. The City of London was also a place for punishment and executions - we will explore some of these. Hear of the warring Queens who haunt a ruined monastery, The black shape that haunted the prisoners in Newgate prison Why you weren't safe in the Cities churchyards - and many more tales of the horrors that took place in these seemingly beautiful places. . . .
- We will meet at St Paul's tube station - exit 2 by the Co-Op. - We will explore St Paul's Cross - a place where banned books were burned, sinners were scorned, heretics were damned and punishments were handed out. - Temple Bar - built by Sir Christopher Wren - a beautiful gate in Portland stone - but it also served a darker purpose. - The site of Newgate prison - the blackest hole in London. - The Watch House - a police station which was also there to watch over the graveyard next to it. - Smithfield Market - healing, religion, horses - and execution. - The oldest houses that survived the devastating Great Fire of London. - The ghost of Barts Hospital. - A moving memorial to brave Londoners who lost their lives saving those of another. - Guildhall - a place for famous trials.
