Hello, and welcome to East Kent! I find local history fascinating and have a wealth of stories and anecdotes to share of my local area. I am also a keen walker, enjoying good strolls in interesting places. Finally, I like a good glass of real beer - in fact I brew my own. Combining these three pleasures, I refer to my tours as ‘TrAles’. They are historical walking tours with ale! We will rest from our walk in traditional English pubs to sample fine ales. If you’re not into ale, don’t worry. You will enjoy the pubs and can select other refreshment. Professionally, I have been involved in science education for many years and still lead professional development opportunities for educators. As a result, I have developed excellent presentation skills, and these should be evident as I lead you on a walking adventure. So, join me for a TrAle in historic East Kent. I guarantee there will be some surprises and with a good walk, interesting stories and fine ales, what is there not to like?

Embark on a captivating journey to the heart of Dover with an immersive exploration along the scenic River Dour. This 4-mile TrAle (a walk with beer) takes you through a vibrant tapestry of history, natural beauty, and local charm, tracing the river’s path from its source to where it meets the sea. Dover owes its very existence to the River Dour, which carved through the iconic white cliffs to create the town’s natural harbour. As you traverse this picturesque watercourse, you’ll uncover remnants of historic industrial sites powered by this small but mighty river. These sites were once bustling with activity, producing flour, paper, and ale. The trail culminates in the town of Dover, where you’ll stroll along riverside paths until the Dour merges into the sea. Here, you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the majestic white cliffs, a sight that has inspired countless visitors and residents alike. Join us on the Dour TrAle, where the river might be Dour, but the experience is anything but.
• From its source, just outside Dover, the Dour meanders through four historic villages and two quaint hamlets, each with its unique stories and charm. • You will start from the ancient home of the Knights Templar, pass the highest point of the river that the Romans navigated and end where the 3000-year-old Bronze Age boat was found. • As you follow the river’s flow, you’ll pass through lush parklands teeming with wildlife, offering serene spots to pause and soak in the natural beauty. • To complement this historical and scenic journey, the Dour TrAle includes visits to five fine alehouses along the way.
