Hello and welcome to the South East of England and London, as a guide in this area I have two professional qualifications (known as the Blue Badge) awarded by the Institute of Tourist Guides. I’m based in the beautiful medieval city of Canterbury where I'm also a fully qualified Canterbury Cathedral guide and Canterbury City guide. I would be delighted to develop a private, bespoke tour just for you and your party which can be geared to your particular interests. It could also include an exploration of the surrounding country areas and, perhaps taking in local heritage sites such as the White Cliffs of Dover, its stunning castles, such as Leeds, Dover or Walmer Castles or to beautiful gardens including Sissinghurst or Great Dixter. As a London guide I enjoy bringing to life the stories of this fascinating city. It is a huge treasure trove waiting for you to explore. It could be the fabulous wealth of royal London history, its major sites, art and architecture or some of its quirky streets. Included in my tours are the characters associated with its past:, famous, infamous as well as the everyday folk who have contributed to its multi-layered history. Since I have lived in the South East of England for much of my life, I know its nooks and crannies well; the villages, country roads, good places to stop off for refreshments such as country inns or tea rooms. This area can be enjoyed in so many different ways, walking tours, taxi tours. I can meet you at a train station, Dover Cruise Terminal, your hotel. The choice and the opportunities to enjoy it are many and varied. Combining the best of the South East with our great metropolis of London, I am qualified to guide you around the major sites, such as Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London and the National Gallery. I am fascinated with our capital's history, both in its buildings as well as the many characters from all walks of life who have contributed to its development. Rather like its great river, Old Father Thames, London never stops moving and evolving making it always an exciting place to visit. Blue Badge Guide - South East England Blue Badge Guide - London Green Badge Guide - Canterbury Canterbury Cathedral Guide Member - Institute of Tourist Guides, Guild of Guides, South East England Tourist Guides Association (and previous Chairperson). B.A. (Hons.) English Literature, B.A. (Hons) Fine Art. Post Graduate Certificate in Education. I am not a driver guide but I can arrange transportation upon request.

Overview of your Dover tour

"Hell-Fire Corner" is the name given to the Dover area during the years of the second world war, when it was the focus of continual bombardment. The situation looked bleak. Sir Winston Churchill as Prime Minister was under pressure to save our forces from the hands of the enemy and turning our chances around. In this tour we explore sites telling the story of this unique period. Starting with the evacuation of Dunkirk in "Operation Dynamo", we go below ground to Dover Castle's War Tunnels, the centre of operations. Our focus then switches to the lives of RAF pilots and the "Battle of Britain". We visit a favourite local pub of theirs for lunch, then on to a splendid small museum dedicated to this time and their bravery. The day is rounded off with a visit to a very moving memorial overlooking the English Channel. This is a personal story for me. My family were involved in the war effort; Dad was a glider pilot, Mum a munitions inspector, my Grandparents provided lodgings for overseas military personnel.

Your Dover tour itinerary

We drive up to the Western Heights Viewpoints for an over view of the Port of Dover. On to Dover Castle where we visit the secret war tunnels. On to lunch in a well regarded inn (If you would like). We move on to the Battle of Britain museum, housing an impressive display of Battle of Britain artifacts. The site was itself the nearest Royal Air Force station to enemy-occupied France. We wind up our day at the Battle of Britain Memorial, set on the edge of the white cliffs where the sculpture of a solitary airman looks out across the English Channel. It is then just a few minutes drive back to Dover Cruise Terminal.
