Hello, and welcome to East Kent! I find local history fascinating and have a wealth of stories and anecdotes to share of my local area. I am also a keen walker, enjoying good strolls in interesting places. Finally, I like a good glass of real beer - in fact I brew my own. Combining these three pleasures, I refer to my tours as ‘TrAles’. They are historical walking tours with ale! We will rest from our walk in traditional English pubs to sample fine ales. If you’re not into ale, don’t worry. You will enjoy the pubs and can select other refreshment. Professionally, I have been involved in science education for many years and still lead professional development opportunities for educators. As a result, I have developed excellent presentation skills, and these should be evident as I lead you on a walking adventure. So, join me for a TrAle in historic East Kent. I guarantee there will be some surprises and with a good walk, interesting stories and fine ales, what is there not to like?

Dover is described as the Gateway to England. For centuries it has been the entry point for refugees fleeing persecution, the first line of defense against invasion and the scene of heroic channel crossings. This three-mile TrAle (a walk with beer) uncovers memories of the town’s historic past and highlights the resilience of Dovorians in England’s front-line. Stroll along the busy seafront: white cliffs on either side; shipping coming and going. On the way there will be constant reminders of Dover’s unique history with memorials to warriors and adventurers. Heading away from the coast, some attractions have been destroyed by conflicts past, but others await you. Visit the beautifully restored medieval Maison Dieu; the smallest working church in England and ancient Roman ruins. Also, don’t miss seeing the world’s oldest sea-going craft. However, it is possible that not all the attractions mentioned and shown will be open when you want to visit. Please check with me before booking.
• Walking along Dover’s seafront, beneath the White Cliffs and Castle, we will collect evidence of the historical events that have shaped the town. • Moving into the town, a visit to Dover’s oldest pub, and home to cross-channel swimmers, provides a welcome rest. • Our stroll into the town centre, along the river Dour, will include steps along the Via Francigena – the ancient pilgrims’ pathway to Rome. • The renowned Roman Painted House and 4,000 year old Bronze age boat await us. • Our final few strides will take us back to our starting point and some refreshment in Dover’s most popular micropub. • The TrAle will include stops in three traditional pubs where you will be invited to try some local ales. Not into ales? You’ll enjoy the pubs and alternative drinks are available.
