Dover Castle- A royal castle with origins from 43AD used recently in World War II when Sir Winston Churchill oversaw Operation Dynamo in the ancient tunnels beneath. Leeds Castle - home to six medieval English queens & now beautifully restored. Today the castle has lovely grounds to visit. Walmer Castle - much smaller than Dover Castle, this still retains a 'lived in' feel. The Castle and it's gardens were an enduring favourite of the late HRH QueenMother. Canterbury Cathedral - Mother Church & seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury from 597AD, it attracted pilgrims as told in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sandwich- this ancient town has beautifully preserved houses from 14th century onwards- ideal place for an English Cream Tea including of course sandwiches! Rye - A medieval town of cobblestones and lanes inspiring tales ancient smugglers & ghosts
Our party of four had a wonderful day with Dawn visiting Sandwich, Canterbury and Dover Castle. She was knowledgeable, interesting, attentive to our wishes and a lot of fun to be around. We highly recommend her as a guide and hope to book her again when we return to the area.
I must give a 5 star shout out to Dawn and her driver Tanveer. I gave Dawn a list of suggestions for places I would like to see and she weaved that into a most enjoyable full day for us. Her lively and informative commentary was thought provoking and educational. Tanveer proved his driving skills through the London traffic even with demonstrations closing several roads at the time. Also Dawn knows the out of the way places for lunch as well. Well exceeded all of my expectations!
We had a fantastic tour of Dover and Canterbury with Dawn! She had customized it for our interest in World War II, and was incredibly knowledgeable and a terrific guide. And our driver, Tanveer, was wonderful as well.
If only I could give Dawn a rating higher than a 5-star! Dawn, you are a wonderful and professional guide and historian! We learned so much and thoroughly enjoyed our day. It's not easy to capture and keep the attention of a party of 12, but somehow you did! One of the off-the-beaten-trail highlights was a quick stop at the pub where the English Channel swimmers sign their names. It was a true treat, especially because one of our close friends' names is on the wall!
We had a wonderful day exploring Canterbury and Leeds Castle with Dawn. She was very warm and friendly. Her knowledge of history was impressive and she knew how to share information with you without making it feel like a lecture. Our lunch in a local pub gave us a chance to sample not only some delicious local cuisine but experience some culture as well. Thank you Dawn for a great day!
