**Istanbul the Charming, the Exciting, the Magnificent, Istanbul Beyond the Obvious** Allow me take you through my Istanbul time tunnel with much fun and experience as in the movie "Back to the Future"— or you may choose the wrong tour and end up listening to a guide sounding like a tape recorder :)) I provide the well chosen compact or detailed background with juicy fine details all according to your interest: Our focus is what pulls your attention, then we shape the sightseeing around that. The broader Istanbul picture for my travelers who might like: At Hagia Sophia, we don't just look at history—we observe how it's still alive and shaping the city , even the country, culture and politics today. At Topkapı Palace, we talk about sultans, queens, concubines, eunuchs, dwarfs and beyond, but actually we feel like meeting up with some of these significant colorful unusual people, and they will be connecting to the culture, with their statements or solid echoes on the streets we walk. A carving, a spice, a face, a passing detail—we tie them together across centuries. What looks random at first starts getting connected. We explore not just landmarks, but the stories—old and new—that give the city its character. Each street, each detail, each site, the cuisine connects. Historical content could be boring at times, not when we hear well chosen key events, the human behind - personal historical dramas: Power, identity, coexistence; cultural assimilation vs friction. In some neighborhoods these become more obvious personified in the story of some certain residents past generations and new. Some Byzantine and Ottoman style Shakespearean and Greek tragedy. I collect their stories and bring to your attention. The reknowned charming poet with a Sephardic Jew heritage, the famous Kurdish screenplay writer, The Ottoman pharmasist, the Byzantine medical doctor, The Greek Orthodox priest's daughter as the belowed pious moslem queen of the Ottomans, we have a large collection to share per your interests according to our tour content. Somewhere along the way—often over what many guests call the best baklava they've ever had, and with proper Turkish coffee—we notice something shift: A gesture. A weathered face. A quiet detail most people walk past—suddenly they're clues. And they matter. What we build together is a journey where history, culture, and daily life connect in a natural, continuous flow. A genuine experience. And a right dose of sense of humuor is also packed together. Who I Am Licensed National Guide since 1987. BA in Political Science. Filmmaker. Journalist. Writer. 38 years guiding Istanbul and Turkey. Since 2010 with TBL: 550+ tours, 250+ reviews ( available at a link above), 1,000+ travelers. I've spent four decades studying and introducing this city, learning its languages—literal and otherwise. What Sets This Apart You'll experience Istanbul through a filmmaker's eye and a political scientist's perspective—curated, intellectual, and humorous at times. Some Tour experiences While tours stick to highlights, we will also focus on what they overlook, intricate layers of Armenian, Jewish, Byzantine, Seljuk, Ottoman, and Turkish craftsmanship woven through the city and the Grand Bazaar, alsowith some surprising architectural and historical content to view. You'll taste unique herbal blends at the Spice Market rooted in centuries of trade and cultural exchange. You may meet leather craftsmen, painters, weavers, calligraphers in small workshops—not performances, but relationships I built over decades. On selected tours, my ney (reed flute) instructor performs: rare, intimate, moving. I guide 1–3 tours a week, which means I stay genuinely engaged with each experience. Small groups (I do not service large groups). No cookie-cutter itineraries. What's Included ✓ Deep cultural and historical context √ fast track ticket options to iconic highlights like Hagia Sophia or Topkapi Palace. √ Great off the beaten path tours √ Beyond surface level rare deeper background at sites including Byzantine Chora Church, Archaelogical Museum, Dolmabahce Palace, Greek Orthodox Patriarchate Church ✓ Access to local artists, craftspeople, and working artisans √ Excellent comments on Istanbul's multicultural ethnic origins with some editorially well chosen true stories of some outstanding personalities. ✓ Layered understanding—the city's puzzle pieces coming together ✓ Flexibility—your itinerary shaped around your interests My Promise Information is like a fine spice. At the right dose is perfect, overdose is the issue —it must be well balanced, and according to your interests. ** Imagine being in Europe in 18th century . You are missing a Waltz dance performance. Or Cuba and Salsa, or Flamenco and Spain . Like those not to be missed in Istanbul: The Black Sea Dance , The Aegean Zeybek, Istanbul Gypsy's dances, the imperial apple's' in the eye's dance , plus the artistic male and female seperate belly dance performance. These are real cultural experiences, including each region's or dance's own folkloric dress. Such an easy access packed within 1 hour a lovely concentrated performance. (certain days only, see below) , ** meyhane ( turkish style tavern , live music bar and restaurant combined )culture with meyhane fasil music 3/4 hour Fasil music is usually violin, clarinet, darbuka ( single-headed hand drum) , at times cumbus (turkish oud) added, at times a belly dancer showing up, and the other tables around you also dancing (possibly after some drinks you would join them , too) Gives insight and hands on experience on how Turks entertain themselves by joining them.
-We begin the evening with a small restaurant (once also visited by Russell Crowe) or its tastier rivalby 6. 30pm to be on time for an 8. 30 pm folk dance show of little over 1 hour (folk dance is only available on Tue, Thurs, Sat): Out of 12 different regional dances, 2 to 3 is fantastic, 3 to 4 are super, few could have been omitted, 2 to 3 are okay. Highly worthwhile for about 6 dances, including belly dance by a male and female in a high-end artsy form. The first 7 photos show only some of these dances. -Then we continue to explore the nightlife of Istanbul. - onto Meyhane (Turkish version of Greek tavern) with fasıl music, surrounded by Istanbul crowds having fun. This should be the way to feel and live an evening with great local flavor. the folk dance days: Folk dance is tue, thu, sat. at 8. 30 pm. There is also a seperate whirling dervish performance of the same venue daily at 7 pm for enthusiasts this can also be considered.
