The Cheetah Centre was established in 1971, initially as a cheetah breeding project and the Centre has during the past 40 years bred over 800 cheetah cubs. Various conservation projects have been initiated since its inception which also includes a successful African wild dog breeding programme. The centre offers hope to many of our endangered species - a visit here raises funds for the conservation effort, educates and offers a wonderful opportunity to see these animals and birds up close. Species include cheetah; King cheetah, a colour variant which was bred here for the first time; Caracal; African Wild Dog; Brown Hyena; African Wild Cat and Cape Vulture. The founder of the Centre, Ann van Dyk, has devoted her life to conservation and pioneered the breeding of these species in captivity. Her book on the cheetah project is available at the centre. PLEASE NOTE: The standard tours do NOT CATER FOR CHILDREN UNDER 6. There are shorter family tours for young children. Please enquire. Animal Welfare compliant
- We drive to de Wildt - about 1. 5hrs from Johannesburg. Our route will depend on timing and location. - The tour starts with a short video on the centre and it's aims. - If we are doing the Cheetah Run, we walk down to the run area for this. - We walk up to the departure area for the tour vehicle and depart on the tour in an open vehicle. - The tour ends after about 2 hrs. Compliant with the Animal Welfare Policy. We can stop in Pretoria City either on the way back or on the way there, depending on tour selected. We can visit the Kruger House Museum, Church Square, the Union Buildings, City Hall and the Natural History Museum. Please enquire as to options.
