The key part of the Mineral Revolution in the late 1800 and early 1900 known as the Witwatersrand Gold Rush led to the establishment of Johannesburg, which is the home of the Apartheid Museum. And when the majority of Afrikaners, a group of Dutch won the elections in 1948, where the majority of native blacks, were denied the vote, racial segregation became the official policy throughout the country and laid the concrete foundation for apartheid. The opposition Native parties such as the African National Congress emerged in full force with the intention of liberating the blacks South Africans, and these opened a dialogue about South Africans who experienced apartheid and resisted discrimination. The museum lets you explore the history of the civil rights movement and its impact on our culture today. The museum houses several exhibition items related to famous protests of segregation such 21 March 1960 Sharpville Massacre that led to 69 deaths and the 17 June 1992 Boipatong Massacre that led to 45 deaths.
