Soweto Half Day Private Tour

Thabang was an exceptional guide and provided an amazing experience. He went far beyond the standard tourist routes to show us the authentic living conditions in Soweto. As travelers from Kenya, we found the comparison between our two countries especially regarding government services like water, sanitation to people in informal living areas and the complexities of corruption to be an incredible learning opportunity. Thabang is deeply committed to his work and very knowledgeable. He was also incredibly mindful of our schedule, ensuring we fully enjoyed Johannesburg while getting us back to the airport perfectly on time. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a meaningful and honest exploration of the city.

What a truly interesting and worthwhile tour this was! On an 8-hour layover, rather than spend wasted hours sitting around the airport, I booked a private tour for my family with Thabang to Soweto. Thabang was just brilliant. What an intelligent, engaging and honest young man he is. He drove us past many known sights around his township, but of more interest was his personal story. We saw his Soweto, where he’s come from and where he plans to get to. With our permission, he took us off the normal tourist beaten routes and instead drove us to a shanty town where we met with a friend of his who walked us through his housing area. This was poverty like we’d never previously experienced, but we also saw immaculately painted shacks, pride and friendliness - as well as ambition to better their situation. We were wowed by Thabang and highly recommend him and his wonderful tour.

Thabang guided up expertly, with much knowledge, empathy, and humor through Johannesburg and Soweto. We left with a much greater understanding of the culture in this part of South Africa. I would highly recommend using Thabang as a tour guide.

Had a fantastic day out in Soweto and at the Apartheid museum with Thabang. He was fantastic with the kids and it was brilliant to get a local’s perspective. Couldn’t recommend him highly enough.

We have always had good luck with Tours By Locals and yesterday with Thebang was no exception. Thebang was an outstanding guide. He was punctual, knowledgeable, passionate about what he does, about South Africa and about Johannesburg in particular. We enjoyed our time with him as he gave us insight into life in JNB for him and others across the economic status. He took us to parts of Soweto that most tourists don’t have the opportunity to see as well as a couple of the usual tourist destinations. He was able to explain a lot about the country’s history and its current events. He is easy to understand, at least for Americans and he had no problem understanding our accent. If we came back to JNB, we would seek him out.

This tour was the perfect way to kick off our South Africa vacation. We were struggling because our timing wasn't perfect for one of the less costly packaged tours and then I learned about Tours by Locals and I am so pleased that we did this. Thebang was able to accommodate some schedule tdemands on our part and he showed us things we never would have seen without a personal guide. I strongly recommend this tour. We've learned so much and enjoyed very much sharing experiences with Thebang.
