This is a very interesting and educational tour to anyone coming into the Gauteng Province. Here you get to learn about the history, culture, local food and dance. The apartheid museum will reveal to you how bad the system of segregation was, on the non whites. It reveals and showcases the hardships that the black population went through. Even though the situation was hard and unbecoming, the people never stopped fighting for their rights and raising their voices. Well, the people where not fighting against the colour of the skin but where fighting against the system of the ruling. Soweto is a historical township. This was the heart and engine of the struggle against apartheid. The township was home to many activist, in the likes of Mandela ,Winnie OR Tambo and the others. Here you learn the history and the different cultural groups living in the township. This is also the home to the Hector Peterson memorial, Mandela house, Tutu house and other historical sites in the township.
Thabelo was very responsive to our needs and is a prof. He presented a balanced view with tons of information about Joburg, the student uprising and Soweto, past and present. The Apartheid Museum was well worth the time. This was our only opportunity to learn about apartheid before beginning our safari and we are really glad we booked with Thabelo.
The museum was exceptional, giving you a whole new perspective on life during the apartheid era. But the biggest standout was our guide, Thabelo, who was articulate, engaging and exceptionally knowledgeable about the history of that time. He was willing to share a tremendous amount of his personal experience, which made it particularly poignant.
Excellent tour with Thabelo. He was gracious, knowledgeable, and interested in informing us about the Johannesburg he has grown up in. The Apartheid museum is a not to miss experience. Going to Soweto afterwards and seeing the school where the children started the protest that changed South African politics and life for black people in general, was important. Thabelo was an excellent shepherd of us!

Great overview of Johannesburg's dramatic history and transition from Apartheid. Also visited SWETO for overview of various lifestyles in the city.
9:00 pick up from the hotel. 09:30 the apartheid museum. Tour can last for 2 hours. This is a self guided museum. 12:00 Soweto township. Drive through the rich part, hostels, Bara, Orlando towers, shanty towns to Orlando West. Vilakazi street. This is the street which is the home to 2 peace Nobel prize winners. Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Option for lunch stop if needed. 12:30 Visit the Mandela house. tour last for 15 minutes. 13:00 the Hector Peterson Memorial. Walk around the garden of remembrance. 13:30 depart back to the hotel. 14:00 hotel drop off. NB: The Apartheid museum is closed on Mondays only. This tour can be customized.
