Overview of your Johannesburg tour

This Private tour is ideal for an airport layover. We begin by browsing the City of Johannesburg, the largest man-made forest/jungle in the world, and also the largest city not built on a river, harbour, or situated on a lake. We drive to Soweto and enter using the Diepkloof ext entrance. On our way, we will come across the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, which was once the largest in the world and now the largest in Africa and the Southern Hemisphere. You get to learn about its history and also why it was an important venue for the British Royal family including the young Queen Elizabeth to visit in 1947. We visit a squatter camp, a shanty town without electricity and plumbing.

If you visit Johannasburg and are interested in learning more about history and the area of Soweto Nathan is your guy. VERY knowledgeable, friendly and was most helpful with our needs. My husband uses a wheelchair and that makes things a bit harder for him to navigate. Nathan took special care and showed us the area making sure everything was accessible to him. Just understanding more of the history of what the people have endured was outstanding, seeing the differences in how people live and visiting the Mandela home all were wonderfu. I can highly recommend Nathan for your time in Johannasburg!

This tour was a great match for us. First of all, being picked up and dropped back off at the airport was a tremendous convenience. As other reviews have suggested, Nathan is smart, knowledgable, and gave us a lot of insight and perspective. What we also discovered is that he is curious, and we ended up talking a lot about the city we are from and comparing and contrasting South Africa to the USA. So it was a really interesting, inspiring, stimulating experience for us. My son, who is a teenager, originally really didn't want to go on the tour--he was missing his girlfriend and wanted to go home. Almost as soon as we were in the car with Nathan, he was involved and talking, and at the end of the tour, I heard him tell Nathan it was his favorite experience of our 2+ week trip. The funny thing is I had seen someone else say that in their review, but my son never saw the reviews, it was just his sincere conclusion., Also, considering we hiked around on Table Mountain, wine tasted in Stellenbosch, and saw wild lions and leopards as Kruger, that is an especially strong compliment! Thank you, Nathan!

My wife and I took this tour with Nathan in June 2025. We had a grreat time and Nathan is a most informative and knowledgable guide.Touring Soweto with a person who grew up there and lived in the city both as a child and as a an adult gave us a real insight into the social fabric, history and modern day life of this fascinating place.Nathan is easy to talk with and we really appreciated his going the extra mile to involve us at a personal level. We would highly recommend Nathan as as local guide.

Nathan was very responsive to our needs and was able to customize the tour to fit our needs. He is very knowledgeable about South Africa, Soweto, Joburg and South African history and unlike many guides he is also able to put things in the context of his vast global knowledge and make comparisons that are very helpful for non natives to understand what’s going on in SA. He also has a great sense of humor!

We just completed the layover tour to Soweto. It was excellent, Nathan is a very knowledgeable and reliable tour guide. I think this tour is a must for anyone who wants to get out of the bubble of game drives, lodges, and beaches. Highly recommended!
