Overview of your Johannesburg tour

Drive with me to Johannesburg city, as this is the city that I'm more present in and as a resident of the city, let's experience it holistically together. Let's also drive to Soweto. When I grew up as a child I remember Soweto as a neighbourhood with dusty streets or untarred roads, but today Soweto is one of the developed townships in the Johannesburg district, and the government is investing a lot in the development of tourism to make it a safe and a reliable tourist destination, and improving infrastructure in the process. This tour connects me with my heritage and walking in the footsteps of some of our liberation movement activists such as Walter Sisulu, Arch-Bishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela makes me connect even more with our journey to freedom and more importantly, it's the history of those stalwarts' icons. When you enter Nelson Mandela's house you get the feeling of heroism and when you stand on Hector Pieterson Precinct you get a feeling of braveness and courage.

Andrew is a wonderful tour guide, friendly, informative and professional. He put together a tour that gave us a very thoughtful overview of South Africa’s history, not shying away from its troubled past, but also offering a hopeful and positive view of the present and future. Of particular note were the Constitutional Court and its very impactful art exhibit and, in Soweto, the Hector Pieterson Memorial, Nelson Mandela’s house and the Kliptown Youth Program. Lunch at a traditional South African restaurant was the perfect cap to the tour. We highly recommend Andrew as a tour guide.

An excellent couple of days with Andrew in Johannesburg, Soweto and Pretoria. Andrew was wonderful and we learned such a lot about each place and the history particularly since the overthrow of apartheid. Could not recommend more highly.

Andrew did a good job with what he had to work with. Johannesburg being an industrial city did not have a lot of beauty to offer but the history of Apartheid was well presented as were the related sites in Soweto.

Suggested itinerary: 9h30 - This day begins with picking you up from the hotel. 10h00 - Constitution Hill - an old Fort and home of South African High Court. 10h30 - We depart to Johannesburg Downtown drive past Nelson Mandela Bridge connects Downtown and Braamfontein. 11h00 - Drive through the City of Johannesburg, and see some of the oldest buildings. 11h30 -Drive through Maboneng Precinct Downtown and walk through Fox street (Optional). 12h00 - Apartheid Museum (Closed). 12h00 - Depart to Soweto township, drive past FNB stadium. 12h30 - Drive past the Soweto Cooling Towers (Famous Landmark in Soweto) 12:45 - Stop at Hector Pieterson Memorial Site. 13h15- Walk on Vilakazi Street, and visit Mandela House Museum. 13h45 - Lunch in Soweto, and enjoy South African Cuisine (Sakhumzi Restaurant) 14h45 - Shop around Vilakazi Street. 15h30 - Transfer to your hotel or the airport.
