The town is the home to the therapeutic spring water discovered in the 19th century. Crossing the Ohinemuri River within the dramatic Karangahake Gorge, a deep canyon cut through the Kaimai Ranges . Highlights pf the gorge include cascading water fall, gold-mining sites and the charmingly old-fashioned Victoria Battery Museum and amazing 1100m-long railway tunnel. Then there is also the cute Wakino Station where there is a cafe. You have the option to either walk or bike the gorge.

The west coast is wild, dramatic and beautiful. This is the real New Zealand and I have been visiting here since it seems like forever! This day out combines both the city and countryside, beaches and nature.
Finish the day with a trip to one of the city's beautiful volcanoes and enjoy the views from east to west, north to south of a city built on the narrow land between 2 harbours.
