Maori called Auckland Tāmaki Makaurau meaning Isthmus of One Thousand Lovers, and I want you to find out why. Walk on the land where terrific battles, reclamation and excavation have all left their scars on our beautiful city. We weave our way through narrow streets, enter buildings to see the architecture and design features. Explore Takutai Square, unique urban space and the Britomart Precinct. See the remaining Kauri (wood) bricks which were discovered during the restoration and have been preserved. This area is a careful, beautiful development with open spaces, retail, & dining and every art piece has an interesting story. Venture further to Albert Park and Toi o Tāmaki, Auckland Art Gallery. I will show you my old shop, where my kids played on the streets and how the area has become so trendy! Wander back streets to the waterfront exploring the newly developed and restored harbour front as we make our way back to Queen Street and onto the wharf for views, art and history. We finish downtown
- Our first introduction to Tāmaki Makaurau will be 2 fine examples of both our European heritage and Maori heritage. - We explore the Britomart Precinct with its newly restored heritage buildings, history, and development. A fabulous area for cafes, restaurants and shops. Once a thriving portside trading area that more recently fell into disrepair and has been revitalised, including a Saturday morning farmers' market and the new Commercial Bay shopping centre. - Stop nearby for morning coffee and then take a gentle walk to Albert Park and the Auckland Art Gallery, Town Hall and Civic centre . -Walk side streets and Queen Street and explore the harbour front. The area has been redeveloped recently from a commercial fishing base to a people friendly vibrant precinct. - Cross the Te Wero bridge, connecting Wynyard Quarter to the Viaduct Harbour, opening and closing to allow access for the large yachts moored here.
