Oaxaca City Walking Tour

Oaxaca is much more than beautiful churches, colorful streets, and lively markets. To truly understand the city, we begin with the people who shaped it long before the Spanish arrived. This walking tour is a conversation I call "The Story After Monte Albán," exploring how an ancient Zapotec civilization evolved into one of Mexico's cultural capitals. As we walk through streets laid out nearly 500 years ago, we'll connect Oaxaca's Indigenous roots with its colonial past and vibrant present. Along the way, we may sample local snacks, enjoy a handcrafted sorbet, or visit a traditional market where everyday life continues to tell the city's story. You'll leave with a deeper understanding of Oaxaca's people, traditions, and history—because the best tours are conversations, not lectures.

A 9:00 a.m. start is recommended, allowing time for breakfast while avoiding the warmest part of the day. Since this is a private tour, we can also begin at 9:30 a.m. or 10:00 a.m. if that better fits your schedule. Depending on the selected departure time and the pace of the visit, the tour will conclude approximately 3.5 hours later. - We begin at the magnificent Santo Domingo Church, where we'll explore the role of the Dominican Order before strolling through Oaxaca's historic streets, plazas, and colonial architecture. - Along the way, we'll visit one of the city's traditional markets, with opportunities to sample local snacks, enjoy a handcrafted sorbet, or, if you wish, experience the famous grilled-food corridor inside Mercado 20 de Noviembre. - Our walk concludes at the Zócalo, where I'll be happy to recommend a restaurant, café, or other places to continue enjoying Oaxaca at your own pace.
