I grew up in Oaxaca and have lived here most of my life. In between I had the opportunity to study economics and languages. Staying for 4 years outside Mexico gave me a new view from my country and a greater understanding and appreciation of the cultural richness of Mexico. I do enjoy sharing this knowledge with visitors and like to encourage conversation, and answer questions any one has about Mexico's history and actual life. I do believe that conveying accurate information to my guests is a very important factor to appreciate my land. I am used to design and perform personal or private tours. My tours are flexible in duration and places visited. They can be adapted to meet your own personal needs or particular interest. On this tour I am taking you to explore Mitla Palaces with their stone lace decorated walls. A very sophisticated stone decoration with symbols of the ancient Mixtec culture. Teotitlán del Valle wool woven carpets handicraft. The most successful and appreciated handicraft from Oaxaca. The Indian decorated church of Tlacochahuaya where the same colors and workmanship used for the decoration of pre-hispanic temples and palaces was used to decorate a catholic colonial time church. The giant Tule tree. Another grand day with Juan! We met more genuine craftspeople who do excellent work and explained and showed us so much about dyeing wool and weaving. We also visited a mezcal distillery and learned about various agave plants and how they are processed. We highly recommend Juan without any reservations.

Juan is extremely knowledgeable about the history, culture, flora and fauna of Oaxaca. His tour was educational. And he was flexible with us in framing how much time we wanted to spend at each site.
In my experience, a skilled and knowledgeable local guide amplifies the overall experience. Yes, you can read travel guides, and blogs and rely on recommendations, but there is no substitute for a veteran guide that is part Archeologist/Indian Jones, part Natuatilist/Darwin. mixed with equal parts of a historian and philosopher. buckle your seat belts, you are in for the experiential ride of your life. In short, Juan provided a superlative experience that will surely be an indelible memory for our group.
We did this as a private tour with Juan. Mitla is very different from Monte Alban and well worth seeing. Juan is knowledgeable and funny and shares a lot of information without making it seem like a lecture. The weaver's studio is also a highlight as we learned about the yarn making and dyeing process with natural dyes. We enjoyed our time with Juan and hope to see him on our next trip. Highly recommended!

The itinerary starts with the visit of the The giant Tule tree which has the largest trunk in the world Then the tour goes next to the Tlacochahuaya village to admire the Indian decorated church of Saint Jerónimo. The next place to visit will be Teotitlán del Valle to see a demonstration of the making of woven rugs. Time for lunch and then the last place to visit is the ancient Palaces of Mitla
