I grew up in Oaxaca and have lived here most of my life. In between I had the opportunity to study economics and languages. Staying for 4 years outside Mexico gave me a new view from my country and a greater understanding and appreciation of the cultural richness of Mexico. I do enjoy sharing this knowledge with visitors and like to encourage conversation, and answer questions any one has about Mexico's history and actual life. I do believe that conveying accurate information to my guests is a very important factor to appreciate my land. I am used to design and perform personal or private tours. My tours are flexible in duration and places visited. They can be adapted to meet your own personal needs or particular interest. Most of the places where handicrafts are elaborated in the Valley of Oaxaca, are situated in the south part of the Valley. But here we include Atzompa which is to the west of the city. Coyotepec is famous for the elaboration of black ceramic in way that are tracked down to the beginning of Monte Alban. The technology is very simple, the dexterity extraordinary! Tilcajete is now the leading locality for the production of fantastic wooden sculptures generally known as "Alebrijes", generally decorated with bright color. Jalieza, where women do preserve the very old way of producing textiles using the back-strap loom, the oldest device for weaving. Oaxaca offers more varied skilled artisanal handicrafts still done by very traditional methods than most anywhere in the world. Juan is a master guide who grew up here in a small village and knows the people, their skills intimately and can relay his insights with great clarity. Loved the experience and the guide
We had a wonderful day touring the pottery studios, wooden figure artists and backstrap loom weavers with Juan. He is very knowledgable and seems to know all the best places. We never would have found the studios he knew about! He is very flexible and willing to tailor the tour to your interests. Since we speak very little Spanish, he was invaluable as our translator. He provided a very enriching experience. Juan also took us to Monte Alban on another amazing tour. He guided us through the museum, and the archaeological site providing us with insight and context. I highly recommend his tours.

Five family members enjoyed Oaxaca for five days. We loved the city, the food, the pride and energy of the people, and without question our time spent with Juan was a highlight of our trip. The first day we were with him, we went to Monte Alban where he brought the ancient Zapotec capital to life for us. My husband and I have toured Monte Alban twice before and Juan made it feel like the first time. He was so much more knowledgeable and engaged than previous guides and we were all blown away. The second day Juan took us on a tour of selected handicraft villages, and we not only the artistry that we saw in each village, but we thouroughly enjoyed spending another days sharing Juan's knowlege of and love for the area. We heartily recommend Juan and will most certainly use his services when we visit Oaxaca again.
Our second day with Juan was also chock full of stories and sights, churches and workshops, markets and a museum. Wonderful insights and experiences with selected artisans: potter, embroiderer, and weaver. Juan is generous with his time and picks excellent eateries.
Juan was a wonderful guide through the craft villages of Oaxaca. He was easy to communicate with, punctual and a world of knowledge about the area. Not to mention, he picked a delicious place for 4 hungry shoppers!!
