I grew up in Oaxaca and have lived here most of my life. In between I had the opportunity to study economics and languages. Staying for 4 years outside Mexico gave me a new view from my country and a greater understanding and appreciation of the cultural richness of Mexico. I do enjoy sharing this knowledge with visitors and like to encourage conversation, and answer questions any one has about Mexico's history and actual life. I do believe that conveying accurate information to my guests is a very important factor to appreciate my land. I am used to design and perform personal or private tours. My tours are flexible in duration and places visited. They can be adapted to meet your own personal needs or particular interest. My tours include transportation and since I am a fully licensed and registered guide, I have been granted a Permission for Tourism Transportation in Federal Highways issued by Mexico's Federal Government. For every visitor of Oaxaca, the visit of the Ancient Sacred City of the Zapotecs: Monte Alban, will be a big joy. This was one of the most important cities in the Mesoamerican civilization and continues to be one of the most impressive to all the visitors. Located at the topo of a complex of hills nearby the modern city of Oaxaca it offers a stunning view of the Valley and is integrated by various monumental structures: The Northern Platform, the Main Plaza and the South Platform. This was the heart of the ceremonial center with many temples, palaces, open ritual spaces and administration buildings. It important to notice also the Gallery of the so called 'Dancers' a group of engraved stones with human figures dated to the very oldest time of the city. The site is also a UNESCO, Cultural Heritage of Humankind. For all the lovers of history and culture, Monte Alban is a must.
Juan was a wonderful, thoughtful and knowledgeable guide. We learned so much from him! He was kind and was and helpful especially with my older aunt who was anxious about the steep steps on the pyramids of Monte Alban. He was encouraging and took her hands so they could “dance” together down the steps. It was so gracious and caring. I highly recommend this tour with Juan.
Once again, this website hooked us up with an outstanding guide. Juan Lara was very professional, flexible with planning and knowledgeable. His english was very clear as he explained the interesting history of the Monte Alban site. His pace accommodated us perfectly and he fully entertained our curious questions and thoughts about this Zapotec ruin. and yes, the site was incredible to view and visit.

Juan was an amazing guide. His passion for the history and culture of Oaxaca is incredible. Everything comes with context, which makes the experience that much more meaningful. If you are looking for someone to just walk you around the site, this is not your tour. But, if you are looking for someone to give you the tools to fully appreciate Monte Alban for everything that it is, Juan is your man!

From our starting place, we drive to the archaeological site and then we visit the local museum which is a good introduction to what we see then in the site. We start with the Northern Platform, the to the Main Plaza, the 'Danzantes' building, the Observatory, the main Altar and the Ball Game court yard. Good walking shoes are recommended for this tour *If you are traveling with a party larger than 4, please let me know and a customized tour will be sent to you with the right price
