Hello! I’m Meiko, a nationally licensed tour guide based in Kagoshima. I was born and raised here, surrounded by beautiful nature and warm, welcoming people. After living in Tokyo and spending 12 years working as a guide in Kyoto, I’m now back in my hometown and really happy to share it with you. I also lived in the United States while raising my newborn baby, and during that time I was helped by many kind local people. That experience stayed with me, and now I try to guide my guests the same way, like welcoming friends from abroad. When we walk together, I like to share the stories behind what you see, so places feel more meaningful, not just something to look at. I also enjoy talking about what I learned from my family, my great-grandparents, grandparents, and parents—who lived through Kagoshima’s history. Kagoshima has so much to offer, from its powerful volcanic landscape to its samurai past and everyday local life. I hope you can feel not only the sights, but also the spirit of this place. I’m really looking forward to meeting you and exploring Kagoshima together! (* Senganen is closed on the first Sunday of March, so this tour is not available on that date.) Discover the stories of samurai and visionary leaders at Sengan-en and the Shoko Shuseikan Museum, two of Kagoshima’s most famous historic sites. During this five-hour tour, you’ll step into the 17th to 19th centuries, when the Shimadzu clan helped make the region one of Japan’s most advanced. As you stroll through the traditional garden, you can listen to water flowing over stones and leaves moving in the breeze. The garden also gives you beautiful views of Sakurajima. After that, you’ll visit the Shoko Shuseikan Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site known as the birthplace of Japan’s early industrialization. Your guide will share stories about samurai, innovation, and resilience, showing how history connects to modern Japan. At the end of the tour, we’ll head to Tenmonkan Downtown to shop for souvenirs.
