Guide #7620
Hello! I’m Meiko, a nationally licensed tour guide based in Kagoshima. I was born and raised here, surrounded by beautiful nature and warm, welcoming people. After living in Tokyo and spending 12 years working as a guide in Kyoto, I’m now back in my hometown and really happy to share it with you. I also lived in the United States while raising my newborn baby, and during that time I was helped by many kind local people. That experience stayed with me, and now I try to guide my guests the same way, like welcoming friends from abroad. When we walk together, I like to share the stories behind what you see, so places feel more meaningful, not just something to look at. I also enjoy talking about what I learned from my family, my great-grandparents, grandparents, and parents—who lived through Kagoshima’s history. Kagoshima has so much to offer, from its powerful volcanic landscape to its samurai past and everyday local life. I hope you can feel not only the sights, but also the spirit of this place. I’m really looking forward to meeting you and exploring Kagoshima together! You will not find a more thoughtful guide in Japan than Mai. She shared her knowledge, made sure we had unique experiences at the various places we visited, and even brought fans, umbrellas and menthol wipes to help get through the difficult heat. My sister and I loved the 2 days we shared with Mai and we highly recommend her!
Mai is a fantastic one-of-a-kind guide. One would be hard pressed to find a better guide in Japan. Her knowledge and willingness to share is wonderful but what really makes her stand out is all of the small extras and kindnesses. To make sure we were comfortable in the sweltering heat, Mai had on hand fans, umbrellas and menthol wipes (so refreshing!). She taught us...
We spent two days with Mieko touring the numerous temples and shrines in Kyoto as well as other historical sites in Kyoto. Meiko is very knowledgeable of the area and the history of Japan. In addition to visiting a number of historical sites, Meiko helped us understand the transportation system and how to navigate Kyoto on our own. She also introduced us to Japanese...

Thank you so much for your kind words and high rating. It was a great pleasure to be your guide. I really enjoyed showing you both around Kyoto and visiting various places together. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the lunches as well. There's still so much to explore in Kyoto, and I look forward to seeing you again on your next visit.
Meiko was wonderful even before we met her for our guided tour. She corresponded with us over email well before our tour date, making suggestions for the sights to see and how to get around between them and allowing time for a really wonderful traditional meal. The weather wasn't kind to us, but this particular day of our visit to Japan stands out and will stay in our...
