Hi, my name is Thordur Hjalmarsson but I go by the nickname Thor. I am a tour guide, anthropologist and a wood worker living in Akureyri in north Iceland. I've been guiding all over Iceland, mostly in the north though, for the last 7 years and I have no plans to quit any time soon. I am passionate about my work and being out in the nature enjoying life in the good company of my dog, my friends and travellers that have decided to visit this beautiful island. I grew up in Akureyri but I've lived in quite a few places around Iceland and abroad and Lake Mývatn is my second home. I am knowledgeable about my surroundings, history, geology, geography and culture and I can talk just as much about sheep and old farmers as I talk about lavafields and glaciers. I've always enjoyed working with people, and being able to combine meeting new people and travel around my country is a blessing. Whether I'm cruising along the coastline or into the highlands, I'm happy to be out in the nature and on the road. ps. in one of my pictures you can see my dog, Yrja the princess and if you are a dog lover and you appreciate her company she will be happy to join us. She happens to be a big fan of the Icelandic nature, just as much as I am. - Licensed Professional driver. - Certified Wilderness First Responder - Fully licensed vehicles by the Icelandic Transport Authority. - Licensed Tour Provider by the Icelandic Tourist Board - University of Iceland, Anthropologist

There are no places in North Iceland better to visit if you want to get up close to the famous puffins. The Birdlife on the island is incredible and we are literary walking amongst the puffins on our short hike up on the top of the island. The view up there is breathtaking, overlooking Skagafjörður Fjord and out to the Arctic Ocean. The Toll Peninsula is scenic to say the least with it's black sand beaches and charming fishing villages. Relaxing and enjoying the amazing view in the eternity pool at Hofsós village is a welcome break after sailing to Drangay Island and having lunch at a local restaurant. This is a true experience of the north, do it with locals!
We leave Akureyri at 8 am and on our drive to Sauðárkrókur town we enjoy short photostops admiring the mountain range of the Troll Peninsula. From Sauðárkrókur we sail to Drangey Island, the home of the puffins where we enjoy a short hike around the island with a local guide. The Drangay tour takes about 4 hours so a lunch break at a local restaurant is welcomed when we arrive back to Sauðárkrókur Town. After our lunch break we drive to Glaumbær Turfhouse Farm Museum, where we spend an hour or so getting an insight to the farmlife as it was in the last centuries. Next we drive to a near by village called Hofsós to soak in the geothermal infinity pool for an hour or so. The drive from the pool to Hofsós takes us around the the most northern part of the Troll Peninsula as we leave Skagafjordur Fjord. Siglufjordur is the town furthest north on the peninsula and there we walk around town and have a coffee break. On our drive to Akureyri we stop at a black sand beach and a charming fishing village or two.
