The beautiful town of Akureyri is so much more than just a place to sleep and eat while you explore the north of Iceland. This town has a fascinating history and unique culture that are well worth exploring, and what better way to do so than to be shown around by a local? Did you know that the first Icelander to watch television did so in Akureyri? Or that the first Icelandic woman to vote did so in Akureyri as well? Do you wonder how did people fish here in the winter back in the day? What about how do people party here today? On this tour, you'll get the chance to be shown around this unique town just below the arctic circle by an experienced local guide who can answer all of this and more! Along our way, you'll get to taste some local delicacies and enjoy a warm cup of coffee or tea!
·After gathering, we’ll start the tour with a relaxed stroll along the ocean towards downtown Akureyri. ·Once there, you’ll be able to taste an Icelandic hot dog as I tell you about the town's history and how it grew from a small trading port to the capital of the north. ·From the downtown, we'll continue walking along the seaside towards the old town, where each house has a story to tell. ·On arrival, we'll grab some local ice cream and if you're interested, visit a museum too! ·After exploring the old town, we'll walk through the magical Akureyri botanical gardens, where we’ll sit down for a coffee before heading back to downtown Akureyri and stopping to behold the iconic church of Akureyrarkirkja before the end of our tour. This itinerary is flexible and can be stretched to include any sights within reasonable walking distance. The tour can easily be altered to include no steep uphill walks and a driving version of the tour can be arranged for an additional fee too.
