Hi, my name is Thordur Hjalmarsson but I go by the nickname Thor. I am a tour guide, anthropologist and a wood worker living in Akureyri in north Iceland. I've been guiding all over Iceland, mostly in the north though, for the last 7 years and I have no plans to quit any time soon. I am passionate about my work and being out in the nature enjoying life in the good company of my dog, my friends and travellers that have decided to visit this beautiful island. I grew up in Akureyri but I've lived in quite a few places around Iceland and abroad and Lake Mývatn is my second home. I am knowledgeable about my surroundings, history, geology, geography and culture and I can talk just as much about sheep and old farmers as I talk about lavafields and glaciers. I've always enjoyed working with people, and being able to combine meeting new people and travel around my country is a blessing. Whether I'm cruising along the coastline or into the highlands, I'm happy to be out in the nature and on the road. ps. in one of my pictures you can see my dog, Yrja the princess and if you are a dog lover and you appreciate her company she will be happy to join us. She happens to be a big fan of the Icelandic nature, just as much as I am. - Licensed Professional driver. - Certified Wilderness First Responder - Fully licensed vehicles by the Icelandic Transport Authority. - Licensed Tour Provider by the Icelandic Tourist Board - University of Iceland, Anthropologist

The main attraction in Iceland in the winter time is the natural phenomenon the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. With 8 years experience showing people the lights a tour with me could be an experience you will never forget.
We head straight out of town, away from the street lights and head to the best location to see the lights. It depends on the activity of the Northern lights and the weather where that location is. We stay out for 3 hours and of course longer if needed and if the lights are going strong as it comes to the end of the tour. Enjoy hot coffee/tea and Icelandic traditional pastry as we enjoy the silent winter night in the north.
