Hi, my name is Thordur Hjalmarsson but I go by the nickname Thor. I am a tour guide, anthropologist and a wood worker living in Akureyri in north Iceland. I've been guiding all over Iceland, mostly in the north though, for the last 7 years and I have no plans to quit any time soon. I am passionate about my work and being out in the nature enjoying life in the good company of my dog, my friends and travellers that have decided to visit this beautiful island. I grew up in Akureyri but I've lived in quite a few places around Iceland and abroad and Lake Mývatn is my second home. I am knowledgeable about my surroundings, history, geology, geography and culture and I can talk just as much about sheep and old farmers as I talk about lavafields and glaciers. I've always enjoyed working with people, and being able to combine meeting new people and travel around my country is a blessing. Whether I'm cruising along the coastline or into the highlands, I'm happy to be out in the nature and on the road. ps. in one of my pictures you can see my dog, Yrja the princess and if you are a dog lover and you appreciate her company she will be happy to join us. The phrase "Tours by Locals" really sums up our experience with Thor, as his personal history is interwined with the region we toured. He did a great job of accommodating an injured knee. Thor is also extremely knowledgeable about the region's geography. If you've seen Travel Man in Iceland, Thor is definitely the guide for you!

The perfect guide for this area! Thor grew up here, so he truly knows the ins and outs of this beautiful landscape, but he shares the history along with personal anecdotes. Thor knew people at every stop so we were welcomed in as friends. He knew the menu on our lunch stop and made wonderful recommendations. We had an amazing day - to include stops at a few local stores to shop for clothes since our daughter’s bag missed the flight…. I recommend to any audience! Make sure to invite the pup, she makes the day that much more fun.
Our group of 7 had a wonderful time with Thor and his malamute (which we requested join our tour). We saw many beautiful and interesting sites as well as the homes of many family members, which was fun! And we had a nice lunch along the way. Thor has considerable knowledge of all things Iceland, and clearly loves his dog. Everyone enjoyed having the dog along... Will definitely use him again the next time we are in Iceland.
We had a great day with Thor. We saw all the highlights of Akureyri and thoroughly enjoyed hearing great stories of his family. We learned a lot about Iceland, its history and people along the way. It was a fun relaxing day. I would definitely recommend Thor to anyone looking for a private guide.
Excellent tour! Thor shared his family's story and in the process showed us some of the most amazing scenery! The vehicle was very comfortable for our group of six adults. I absolutely recommend this tour!
We start the day driving through the old town of Akureyri. After driving across the fjord we drive east to Goðafoss Waterfall that is located half way to lake Mývatn only half an hour away from Akureyri. After a nice short walk admiring one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland you can grab some refreshments in the local coffee house before we continue our drive to the lake. As we arrive to Lake Mývatn we enjoy a short walk on and amongst the unique pseudo craters that can be found all around the lake. Next we drive around the lake in its unbelievably diverse landscape with photo stops and short walks. One of Mývatn's most popular sights is Dimmuborgir Lavafield where we walk amongst fascinating Troll-like lava formations. Our last stop is at Námaskarð high temperature geothermal field with its boiling mud pools and beautiful sulphur colors. If time allows, given the port schedule, we can end the tour relaxing in geothermal baths at the Forest Lagoon.
