You might think that a cold, rainy summer day in Akureyri, Iceland, would not be the perfect start to a grand tour on Iceland’s “Diamond Circle”. However, our tour guide Reynir made it a great experience. As a lifelong resident, his knowledge of the region was both informative and entertaining. The magnificent Goðafoss, Dettifoss, and Selfoss waterfalls did not disappoint, nor did the 7km Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel, Ásbyrgi horseshoe canyon, or Hljóðaklettar & Dimmuborgir lava formations. We even saw one lone puffin at the 66.12 nesting area in August, which meant that this puffin didn’t get the email to leave by the end of July. We traveled a lot of miles on this tour, but Reynir was ever mindful of our needs for restroom breaks and snacks: he timed our stops perfectly. Thanks, Reynir for a truly memorable tour!

Wow, just wow! What a packed day, full of amazing sights, great food, relaxing bath and the ability to learn so much about the Icelandic life and culture. Reynir was a fount of information and happy to answer all our questions, and even attempt to teach us to pronounce things in Icelandic- no small task! Cannot imagine anyone would show the amazing sights of the north better!
Reynir was flexible in taking us to just the sites we requested. He had a very comfortable vehicle for 4 passengers. He was personable, knowledgeable and a joy to spend the day with.
Your Akureyri tour itinerary
First, we drive along the coast of Eyjafjordur. We begin by stopping at Goðafoss waterfall on our way to Lake Mývatn. The lake was created by a large basaltic lava eruption 2300 years ago, and the surrounding landscape is dominated by volcanic landforms, including lava pillars and rootless vents. We stop in Skútustaðagígar (pseudo craters) on the way to the unique lava formations of Dimmuborgir which are among the most popular tourist attractions in the Mývatn area. We also go to Grjótagjá Rift, an old natural bathing spot filled with naturally heated water coming out of a rift. We will stop at Selfoss waterfall and Dettifoss, one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. You get the chance to take a bath in the geothermal water. After the stop in the nature baths, we drive back to Akureyri. Our last stop is in Eyjafjordur where you can see over the fjord to Akureyri. Not included: Refreshments and entrance to Mývatn Nature Baths
