Old City of Heidelberg and Castle Half-Day Tour

This 3-hour walking tour starts at the University Square, where you'll explore Heidelberg's vibrant old town. I myself studied art history at the University of Heidelberg and have always had a particular passion for architecture. So I have included highlights such as the Gothic Church of the Holy Spirit or the Jesuit Church next to the bustling Market Square and the iconic Old Bridge over the Neckar. As a special treat, I will show you the specimen of the very first pretzel from the Middle Ages and tell you what happened to the bakers who sold smaller pretzels to their customers. We will pass many bars and pubs typical of a university town - some of which I worked in to finance my studies. Then you'll take the funicular up to Heidelberg Castle, where you'll marvel at its Renaissance architecture and panoramic views. Finally, you'll stroll through the castle gardens before finishing your tour in a traditional German beer garden.

1. University Square (Universitätsplatz) We begin your tour at University Square, a vibrant plaza surrounded by historic buildings and the renowned University of Heidelberg. 2. Jesuit Church and Church of the Holy Spirit (Heiliggeistkirche) From University Square, we make our way to the Jesuit Church and the Church of the Holy Spirit, a stunning Gothic church located just a short walk away. 3. Marktplatz (Market Square) We continue our walk to Marktplatz, the lively market square at the heart of Heidelberg's old town. 4. Alte Brücke Cross the Alte Brücke, the iconic old bridge that spans the Neckar River. 5. Castle Funicular We head to the base of Heidelberg Castle and take the funicular railway up to the castle grounds. 6. Heidelberg Castle and gardens Spend the remainder of your tour exploring the Castle and its meticulously landscaped grounds that offer a tranquil retreat with beautiful vistas. 7.
