Within the eight departments of the Louvre, there is one that is enjoyed by every Ancient Egypt fan, since its opening in 1826. Featuring the mysterious daily life of the Pharaohs, from Narmer (around 3100 BC) up to the conquest of Alexander the Great in 332BC, this part of the Louvre is full of surprises. Napoleon was fascinated by this ancient civilization and during his campaign in Egypt, he took with him 175 persons charged to discover and study the remains of the ancient Egypt on the Nile valley. In 1826, 9000 pieces arrived in this Ancient Egypt department. It has been one of the oldest in the world, presenting pieces from the prehistoric period, to the Ancien, Medium and New Empire as well as the Ptolemaic period. Thus 4 500 years of human History are displayed in one museum, presenting one of the richest collection to visit.
This visit will begins - the big Sphynx in red granit, - the evolution of the hieroglyph, - the gods worshipped along the Nile Valley. - the reconstitution of a mastaba. - the ancient Egyptian jewelry toward the centuries. - the Osiris crypt, with the book of the Deads, - the impressive collection of sarcophagus. - The sacred trio (Osiris, Isis, Horus) - This tour will show you the evolution of this civilisation from his beginning up to its decline presented with some of the rarest art pieces.
