Montmartre is a hill in the north of Paris, which the Parisians themselves call simply "La butte" (The Hill). The hill keeps memories of the Romans' presence in Paris, Christian martyrs, Benedictine abbey, Paris Commune, of the poor, of the displaced, of those who had known suffering and deprivation, as well as of an incredibly numerous artistic community. Indeed, from 1860 to 1918 the Montmartre was Paris's most important center of creativity. At that time, cheap prices attracted here artists from different parts of Europe.
